I reccomend you stick to stock paper filters. Oiled paper if you can find it, like a PureOne. It filters the dirt better than cotton or foam.
There is not much power to be found in a filter change alone. And the gains are not worth it IMO because I hate cleaning those things, and they let more dirt in. (I really wish I took a picture of my filter/intake on the trail run that converting me to a paper user from K&N. You wouldn't believe the amount of dirt that made it through the filter)
But if you must go aftermarket use a oiled foam over oiled cotton gauze is the way to go. They seem to filter better than cotton gauze.
I change my paper air filters often. Every 10k at the most. Less if I feel it is needed. The only problem I see with paper is they don't like getting wet. No big deal.
