Unidentifiable Dashboard Button?

Hey Y'all,

n00b here.

I've got a '84 22r 5spd 4wd that I just purchased, and I can't figure out what this one button on the dash does. It used to have writing on it, but it has worn off, and the previous owner didn't know what it was for either. I've searched all over the internet for pictures or diagrams, (and I've searched for an owner's/tsrm from the proper year, 1985 TSRM is the closest I've come) but all I've found is toggle-style switches, not a button like this is.

It's located to the left of the steering wheel, above the interior light dimmer pot. It used to have writing and is backlit when pressed. Its action is like that of a clickable pen. One press turns it on, and then it cannot be turned off until the truck is shut down, when it turns off automatically. I have yet to try turning it on with the engine off/in accessory mode/key in but in the off position. I have also yet to run the truck for more than 10 minutes with it on (although I did warm the truck up completely and it did not shut off).

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

sounds like the clutch cancel button, it allows you to start the truck without the use of the clutch.

dang it SCUBA you beat me to it !!!!!!! At least I told him how to use it.

Cool. Thanks guys! Makes perfect sense. I was just worried it was some sort of cold start/choke function as I've been having to give the truck gas to start it for the first time in the morning, but from what I've found it seems the proper procedure is just to push the pedal to the floor pre-start and then start without giving it gas.

Thanks for helping out a lowly n00b!

if your truck is carbureted sounds like it is (22R) you must press gas pedal 2 or 3 times to the floor, to both engaged the choke and squirt a little fuel into it to start it, that's 100 % perfectly normal. Now if it's a fuel injected engine (22re) then pushing on the gas pedal is not required as it does nothing really.

Yup it's carbed. And the first carbed vehicle (and first truck) I've owned (as opposed to just worked on) so I'm learning the ropes as I go. I'm loving it so far, already got it stuck in a ditch, locked the hubs, used the low-range, and got out. It's a good feeling. Didn't even stall on the big up-grade getting out! (as I hear the 22r is prone to do)
