Third member options (might be noobish)
Okay, so I want to re-gear to 4.88's. I have stock gears on 31's and eventually will get 33's. First, is it a bad idea to run 4.88's on 31's?
For re-gearing, I think these are my options:
1) Find one at the junk yard. V6, Automatic, with 31' tires stock. How much do third members run at junk yards?
2) Buy Ring and Pinon and have a pro install it into my third member. Is there anything else I'd need besides the ring and pinon? I see seals and bearings and stuff as well on Marlin Crawler. How much does a pro usually cost? And how long do you think the downtime would be?
3) Do it myself. I hear that's difficult.
Am I correct with all of this and do I have any other options?

4.88's and 31's is gonna be geary but if your going 33's do it. if your 4wd you gotta get the front and rear diffs.
1. couple hundred bucks a pop
2. usually 200 bucks for each r&p then install kits range from 100-150, plus install.... So your looking at roughly 200x2 + 100x2 + 150(labor)= 750ish
that labor for 150 is very cheap compared to everywhere else in the country. At my gear shop if i call ahead they can get my diff done in a day max two. Labor is cheaper if you pull your thirds yourself, which is pretty easy.
3. too hard to do if you have no mechanical experience, I wanna learn how to do it one day.

also check into buying gears ready to run. its a little more up front but you'll then have a spare 3rd to sell or use elsewhere. look at http://www.trail-gear.com/toy-diffs.html
i bought both my 3rd from TG ready to run...

Thanks for the input guys!
I have a 2wd, so I'm only looking at one diff. And, I do plan on taking out the third myself. Save some moneyyyy!
Tofer, do they happen to have 3rd members without lockers? I can't seem to find 'em. Or do you know of any other places that do? That'd be great, since finding one at a junk yard doesn't seem to hopeful.
Any other options?
Edit: Ah, Jason beat me to it.

I heard somewhere that you can snap the rear axels? Or something like that... But I was just kind of unsure if it would 'cause anything major with lower gears and smaller tires. Guess not!
