Rear Main Seal Leak or Tranny

I have an 85 22re with W56 tranny. There is a lot of oil leakage on my bell housing, particularly on the clutch slave cyclinder side. It is all over the throw out bearing fork boot and the bottom of the bell housing. I am wondering if the rear main, the front tranny seal, or something else is leaking. The clutch slave cyclinder was leaking and I replaced it. Can anyone give me their best guess?

So is it motor oil, gear oil or brake fluid (clutch)?

That will tell you what's leaking

Is the top of the tranny bellhousing also soaked? It's always best to rule out the rear half moon gasket on the valve cover, just in case. Real easy and cheap to replace, and over time, the oil leaking from them can really add up. otherwise...on the slave cylinder side..I'd have a hard time believing that the rear main, or tranny, would put oil all over the slave a boot. Can you tell if the oil is motor (engine) oil or GL5? The 5 (gear oil) has a real distinct smell. The only other things I can think of are the front diff spraying fluid from the pinion seal (not likely), or you have way too much grease on your front drive shaft and it's getting thrown everywhere...or t-case front output...or your oil pan gasket is leaking bad and it getting blown back onto those areas when you're driving fast.

Do you have a oil spot under your truck after you park it for a while? Always a good idea to clean everything up, then try to see where it's leaking. Oil can really move all over the place from the leak.

i guess the easy way to tell would be the sniffer, gear oil has a nasty stank to it, engine oil smells like engine oil and brake fluid has a weird and different smell as well. if you cant tell between brake fluid or engine oil taste it. brake fluid will dry your mouth up real quick
