just bought an 86!

i am a new member from the bay area and i just bought my first 4x4. its an 86 single cab short bed. i hope to get some pictures up this afternoon. its a little rough but i got it for around 1500 bucks. runs, clutch grabs good, passed smog, and it has new tires. the tire size is 30x9.5x15. am i loosing stock power or are these tires ok to run on a daily basis? ive heard of people having to change out gears just to run 33's so i just wanna make sure. also when i get the pics up i would like to know if anyone can tell me if its raised at all. thanks and anyone from the california bay area that wants to go out and hit some trails let me know. i used to be a ground pounder with slammed trucks and fast cars but off roading just looks like a world of its own.

hey man, congrats and welcome to yt, no matter how it looks, its a yota, and over the next years you will love your truck more and more...you will be okay with 30's you dont have to worry about regearing untill you go above 33's. as for ghe lift, with 30's, it doesnt have to be lifted, so its probably stock ride height, given the fact that the factory preset ride height is pretty high to begin with, but i guess theres really no way to tell untill you add some pics..

congrats on the truck, i have an 85 and i love it, and have fun offroading!!

thats a clean little truck. i swear these cali guys think there stuff is rough. i think yall do it justg to rub your clean rust free trucks in our faces!!! lol. i go stock gears on 35s, so youll be just fine with 30s. the reason we have to regear more then other offroaders is cuz our little 4bangers aint got much power

thanks for welcoming me! as far as the drivers door goes i think someone hit it and the previous owner just slapped another door on it. i do have a dent in the doorjam from it but it hasnt leaked or anything. i want to paint it but at the same time i dont wanna put a nice paint job on it since ill be using it for offroading as well as a commute truck. i wish they would have gone wider on the tires maybe a 31x10.5 but they are 3 months old with a warranty so i cant complain. it has rancho shocks on it and i cant tell if its stock height or not thats why i posted a pic of the rear suspension. the frame has 328k on it and who knows what the motor has. all i know is the lifters make a lot of noise so a rebiuld may be in my future. is it cheaper to have them rebiult or should i just get a used one and drop it in myself? as far as any problems all ive noticed is that the front rotors are warped but the pads are new. also the pitman arm has play so i have slop in my steering. other than that its great. as far as rust free i wouldnt say that. the entire bed is rusted and some surface on the sides as well. no big deal though. any ideas on a way to primer it but have it look decent? maybe a lot of clear coat after?

That bed is definitely not rusted, you should see east coast trucks.

Well, either way, a working 4WD Toyota for $1500 is a darn good deal.

Your engine doesn`t have lifters, it sounds like the valves need to be adjusted. Check out the pic n pull near you, you should be able to find a bad and other parts that you need there.

wow no lifters? haha you can tell i came from the world of old school v8's. ill price around and see how much a valve job would run me. might be hard to find someone who still does that.

From what i can see in the pictures, it looks all stock to me. On the valves, you don`t need a valve job, they just need to be adjusted. How many miles on the engine, has the timing chain ever been replaced ?.

on the engine i have no idea. i bought it from a woman who owned it for 4 years and had put about 5k on it. she just drove it to and from work. all she did was put a new carb on and tires. she had no idea if or when it had been rebiult but the odomater reads 328k. how would i go about adjusting valves? as far as the timing chain goes i have no idea either!
