I got my yota cherry popped today with my 88 4runner purchase....




I've been doing some searching and you guys have a ton of great info here. Thanks for the great references and hopefully I'll get to learn a ton from you all.

My 88 has the 20re. It's in decent condition for having 333,000 miles. Only one rust hole and two other surface spots (including underneath from what I could see).

The previous owner couldn't tell me exactly how many miles are on the current engine. It's either a newer engine or it was a rebuilt original.

I'm taking it to the shop on Tuesday to have a complete run through. I bought a new fuel filter and I'm two bottles of cleaner through the next two tanks.

Any other suggestions for getting all the unknowns all tightened up on it? Any specifics that I should be on the lookout for (other than the timing chain)?

I hope you mean it has a 22re. Congrats on owning a sweet yota!

Welcome to YotaTech, thats a nice 4Runner, Your 4Runner has a 22RE, not a 20RE. Just go through it and change all the fluids and give it a complete tune up, you should be good to go from there.

Congratulations on your new 4Runner! She's a beauty.

One thing to watch out for is the addiction that is wheeling and modding.

Ooops... I meant 22re but I'm on my iPhone and it likes to type what it wants sometimes! Lol. Thanks guys. I'm excited to get her out on some trails.

Nice ride! I had a black 88 4Runner previous and lets just say I dig the white one alot more. And AZ4x4 is right, mine looks fairly stock and I have spent a decent amount of money on it fixing it up. I think the exhaust, wheels and tires, and the soft top is what cost me the most. Everything else has pretty much been pieced together cheap through craigslist.

Thanks! I couldn't believe that can backs run as much as they do. The soft top was going to be the next investment after the general tune up stuff... But at 1400-1800 ish that will have to wait. I spent 2500 on the truck itself! I don't want to almost double my purchase with a top.

It does seem worth it though...

AZ4x4 is completely right. once you get the bug, you cant get rid of it.

Its built like a boat canopy, so if you throw the soft top on, don't worry about getting a rack on there. Mine is a daily so no rack on top is fine for me, I have a Thule rack for the wintertime

Softopper is half the price of a Canback BTW........

I think a new set of gears comes before the top tho. I have 4:10's and it's just a dog on the hwy.

nice runner, I learned to drive a stick on a 4runner exactly like yours. Agreed on the modding bug once you get to the point that you think you have your rig where you want it you find more things to modd and tweak.
