headgasket replacement questions/concerns

I hate to replace my HG in my 86 22r, and have just a few questions.

I have a rock gasket laying around, been on the shelf for about a year...any good?

Do I NEED ARP head studs? My guess is they stretch and need to be replaced, and ARP makes good stuff?

What should I use to chase the tapped stud holes with?

I might just pull the manifold off with the intake still attached, but put then remove the intake on the bench to torque bolts and put a new gasket in. Also plan on getting a silicone vac. line kit from LCE and doing them on the bench.

Does my head need to be resurfaced? Or just checked for warpage?

and the final question. How much time should I expect this job to take. I'll throw in a new timing chain, metal guides, cover, valve seals, vac. lines, and if I'm up to it i'll clean and paint stuff.

yep, take it to a machine shop. My local shop only charges $20 to resurface. You can check it yourself with a super flat and straight surface.

Get the head checked for warpage. If you don't you'll most likely have to tear it apart again... not that that ever happened to me or anything... When you get the process down its an afternoon job. I reused my head bolts and I haven't had a problem at all. ARP would be a sweet upgrade, how deep is your wallet?

Number 1 Torque the head bolts to 65 Foot pounds!!!

look at your gasket if it is clean and shiny your good if it got wet and rusted kink or twisted it is pretty much junk..

I have had these head gaskets on the shelf far longer then a year.

Why did the gasket fail and just how hot did it get??The head should be checked for cracks and to make sure it is straight.

If you have never done this before and things go real good Figure a weekend . If you don`t need things you don`t have.

We are not talking south of the Mason Dixon line hard to remove bolts things to clean.

Look at your head bolts clean them up with a wire wheel The extra $100.00 for ARB studs a few years ago was a little rich for me. If you got the extra money they are pretty

When it is time for a head gasket I also do the whole front of the engine .

Timing cover, oil pump , water pump along with the timing chains guides and assorted other parts. New belts are pretty much a given and of course the hoses.

I don't get it. How come everyone does the timing chain at the same time as the head gasket? Isn't it a completely different area? I had to get my hg done on my 22r and asked about getting the timing chain done at the same time (due to this forum). My mechanic told me that the timing chain was a completely different area and would be about 10 extra hours of labor... is that true or was he messing with me? Obviously we got a good look at the chain and guides and all looked good, but it still would've been nice to put metal guides on while we were in there. Without paying for 10 extra hours...? I'm a new wrencher is why i didn't do it myself.

You pretty much need to remove the head to do the timing chain although it is possible to do it without removing the head .

So 6 months down the road your redoing the head gasket to do the timing chain. I know I would just as soon do it all at the same time.

10 EXTRA hours for a timing chain???

That's obscene, in a proper shop both of it could be done in a days work IMO.

I would bet the extra 10 hours is the flat rate timing chain price which also would include the head gasket.

Just a guess lots of places are scared to do that work because the techs are not up to the skill level needed.:wabbit2:

Unless yor mechanic is planning on pulling the entire engine, 10 hours labor seems a little excessive. Last two TCs I did without pulling the engine. It's a little cramped but still. Guys either messing with you or he really likes the smell of your money. And no disrespect, but if you could see the chain and guides, you can see how close they are together. Just my two cents.
