Pretty new to this. Picked up a 77fj and its going to be the death of me. It was finally running fine and I had to change the harmonic balancer. Can't recall if it was right after or not but I would drive for a couple min. and it would start to backfire and die. It would start up and idle then same thing when gas was applied. Pretty green so I thought it must be carb. Bought a new weber 34 conv. kit and put it on. Was running great for about a day(albeit total driving time of about 45min. Started it today and sure enough couldn't get 50 feet. Kinda went easy on it and I could putt back to the driveway. Idles somewhat fine but any gas and she spits and sputters. Have an hei dist. on it and replaced the coil in it when put on the new carb. Like I said, ran good for awhile so dont think its timing? Any ideas would be great. I love her but she sure knows how to push it.

welcome to the forum-not too many FJ 40 owners on newbie tech so you may want to try IH8MUD or pirate4x4 or Ultimate Yota to get some responses.

First advice-save your money for diagnosis first, throw parts at it second. Toss your symptoms at some 40 owners, locally here in Denver I have a bunch that could help you out.

Next advice-put your location in your signature or name could be someone right down the road from you dying to come by and solve this for ya.
