nope. the lid just serves the complete the water tightness of the airbox (except the stock intake hole). you can remove the lid and the filter will still stay in place, though it could be prone to shake loose maybe a little more easily.

i had the K&N FIPK on my 98', and after having the deckplate on my 03', i would never spend $213 on another FIPK, with the deckplate, you just skrew it in, and hit the water, you can't do that with the K&N

I don't think you get the same sound either with just the top open...
But if you just looking for power I am sure the top open is just the same...
I remember I was doing and oil change and air filter change and I forgot the lid open...
I went for a drive and then when I got hom opened the hood just to double check again that I didn't have any leaks and noticed that it was open....
Here Is My Right-Up With Alot of Pics
I love My Deck Plate mod
Also quick high-jack:
Does anyone notice the noise affects of the ISR mod with the deck plate closed?
I don't notice any noise or such with the deck plate closed
(was really bad rain and there are some places that like to collect around here on the right side of the road...)

I forgot to add that...
A friend of mine was on my way home and I thought I would suprise him witht he new sound...
I blew past him And a second later I get a call from him...
He is like "DAMN THATS LOUD!!!"
Later that week I was at the light waiting to turn into work and he was outside smokin a cig and he calls me and says to give it a littel gas to see if he could hear me from there...
I wasn't even in the shoppin center yet and he was like
"Dude I could hear you all the way over here!!"
Makes me feel even more better that I did it!!

I think it's funny to see the comment of water danger being an issue with the deckplate;the point of the deckplate is having the plate itself to seal the airbox back up when water is encountered.
Having the lid just left open doesn't seal the filter as tight as it should and why take the chance that a gap has opened up around the filter and not notice it for a while? Kinda ghetto while the deckplate is a nice clean look and actually hardly noticeable to even dealer techs.
I put some nylon window screen behind mine and secured it with a hose clamp and mine stays free of large debris.
Does my deckplate do anything? Probably not much but with 6-8 proven whp any little bit helps and I like to tinker on my truck. I have gotten about 15 more miles a tank since I did it and reset the ECU.

YM dude... Deckplate, ISR & a good washable foam filter like the Amsoil or TrueFlow.
Search for backgrounds on the filters, and when you're ready to buy, there are a few Amsoil dealers on the forum, and Jason Burtman is the guy to hit up for TrueFlow.

If you do extensive research and dig deep enough (like i did) you'll discover the deckplate mod isn't the greatest thing. Here's what i did and it's a shame that most people don't understand the concept of air intake or how my mod works... https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/elbow-intake-mod-alternative-deckplate-94448/

Wait... I may be able to save you a ton of money.
From your sig, it looks like you're N/A (so, no supercharger or turbo) right? If so, headers will be a _waste_ of a lot of cash. I ran headers for about a year before I added a supercharger, and it was a VERY expensive lack of judgment & knowledge.
Headers will help an engine that needs to exhale deeper - and that will only come from an engine that's swallowing a LOT more air. There's nothing that you can do to the 3.4L (short of a turbo or SC) to make it inhale deep enough that headers will help. Put them on now and you'll push your power curve into a place that you can't get to until you start _pushing_ air down the throat of that engine.

Now, if you're coming at it from the viewpoint of "only on the street", then that's fine, but I'd suggest taking it a step further and truly get a cold-air intake going by extending a feeder from an airbox opening to some point up on the nose. One guy here pulled the metal trim piece out from under his passenger headlight and routed tubing into there for an intake.
That becomes a VERY nice solution for street use.

I recentlt did the deckplate ans ISR removal. mainly city driving MPG's=14.8. Went on a 3 hr trip this weekend avg.70-80 mph@2200-2500 RPm's going up only got 17.8. Once there trying to so my friend the demon of a noise it makes now it would only DS 1 gear. My ECU must've reset for highway. The drive back same speed & RPM's drove 182 miles only burned 7.5 gallons...do the math...24.2 mpg...no ????. A trip that usually takes 3\4 tank before mods now does it in a 1\2. After driving 50 miles or so city since last night and it makes the demon noise again, with more than a 1\4 tank burned @50 miles.
