Adjusting clutch rod throw

I bought an old beater 4 runner. 1990 3 liter. And one of the previous owner swapped a standard tranny into it. You have to push the clutch pedel completely to the floor for it to engage. The guy i got it from said the rod on the clutch is to short. Has anyone ever heard of this? Is there a way to adjsut it or anything? You would think everything swapped of the standard 4 runner would have been the right size. Sometimes its hard to get in gear. Should be more pedel. Theres no give to the clutch as soon as u let the pedel out a little away it goes. Theres no letting it out a little until you find the friction point its just right there. There definatily should be more pedel there. Theres supposed to be a new clutch and pressure plate in it. Any help would be great.

There is an adjustment bolt behind the clutch pedal up under the dash. Also, try bleeding your clutch system.

yea what he said but your bracket is probably cracked on the corner where it goes through the firewall, its pretty common on these rigs, adjust it and drive it and eventually itll crack and youll need to replace it or weld it up

Just had a look at it and the bracket has been broke and welded a few times, but seems to be fine. Also looks like they welded on the part where the rod screws into the pedal setup. Not sure why. I'll have to see what shape the brackets are on some of my scraped pickups if they are the same.

I was just out messing around with it and its really hard to get into gear. Sometimes it wont go into first and when it does you have to really push it in. I couldnt get it into reverse it just kept grinding so i shut it off. When i went back out it went into reverse, then first then it wouldnt go back into reverse. Just grinding again. Does this sound like a clutch problem or tranny? When you push the clutch to the floor it starts fine like its engaged.

I adjusted the rod on this and still no clutch. If i try bleeding it and that doesnt work any ideas weather it would be the slave or master cylinder? The rod doesnt seem to be pushing through to the master cylinder now. I also noticed that someone welded a spacer between the rod and the pedal to make it longer.

Wow, it sounds really hacked up, on a normal stock setup I would say it sounds like a bad slave cylinder, but hard to say on your rig.

I have a 90 and 91 pickup scraped. The setup on the 91 looks like the one on the 4 runner. The setup on the 90 looks like the rod is longer and the pedal is higher. Was there a diffrence between years? The slave is moving when i push the pedal in, but its only about a cm or half an inch. Not sure if thats enough to engage the clutch or not. I'm thinking i might take the master cyl and pedal setup of my 91 and try it in the 4 runner.

well...i had this exact problem with my 90 P/U...turned out to be that the pedal bracket was flexing because it was cracked...wasn't flexing very much at all...maybe a quarter inch...but that was enough to give me these horrible problems...i'd say get a new pedal bracket from a wrecker (dealership wants like 400 bucks for the bracket so if u go there you'll probably just get really pissed off), re-enforce the hell outta it pop her in bleed the hydrolic system and if it doesn't work after that i'd say you got a big problem

When i was messing around with it i noticed the bracket flexing. it wasnt much mayby like you said quarter or half an inch. I have a few of them that look solid i'll pull one tomorrow and get my neighbor to reinforce it where the other has been welded.

i welded mine up and reinforced it around the corner, then boxed in the top as well as intrenally gusseted it inside the bracket, works great and was free

Red face

If changing the bracket does not cure your issues.

I have seen all kind of strange things cobbled together in these trucks .

I have seen different length slave cylinders wrong one correct box??

you might want to see if you can lengthen the rod on the slave cylinder. So it gives you a longer stroke pushing the throw out bearing against the clutch plate

I have seen the wrong throw out bearing and housing cause these problems.

Good Luck

I changed the bracket on this and the clutch works great. The old one was broke where they welded it, and one of the top brackets it bolts to was broke off. So i just ran a longer bolt up through the body to help support it for now.
