Exclamation 7.4 mpg problem!

just picked up my 82 22r 4x4 today,filled up the tank,i got 89 miles on 12 gals....in 2wd

stock drivetrain,all stock 22r 4 speed manual,33 super swampers,assuming 4:10 gears.
engine runs great......same wimpy issues as every other 22r....65 mph toped out.

i know the speedo is off by a few mph,so im assuming my odometer is off aswell......it runs off the speedo.
speedo reads 45 to keep up with 55 mph traffic.

so im assuming im getting 12-13 mpg.....is this normal?
will 4:88's put my speedo and odometer back on track....if not....what gear ratio should i look into.

Did you look around for a gas leak when it's running?

no gas leaks,no black smoke to indicate running rich,no gas smell.
carb does need a rebuild,i have erratic idle issues....beside that....runs like any other 22r.
no vacume leaks,i shift at about 2000 rpm....no point in redlining this thing.
i said all stock.....the 22r does have 0.50 rock pistons.
stock carb, new fuel pump, fresh head gasket/valve job.stock exhaust and intake set.
stock cam and valves/springs.
timming is good aswell.

ill check my cat converter soon.....just incase.

You don`t have enough gear for the tires you have. If you were to regear with 4.88`s you would have more power and speed, and your gas mileage should go up because the engine isn`t working as hard.

It's likely that you are getting poor mileage, but it's also likely that your calculations are off. 33's are a pushing 20% larger than stock tires, so you're actually going quite a bit further than the odometer says.

I know that with my 31's I add 10% to the odo and the calculations come out right.

You do need to regear.

i know i need a regear....i guess tax season will yeild me some 4.88....or higher.

so if add 20% to my 89 miles, then divide by 12 gallons...ill get a close idea of the actual milage im getting.

Should be, but that's only 8.9 mpg which still doesn't seem right. Even with 33s and 4.10s it shouldn't be that bad.

i love driving the truck....but thats just horrible numbers, makes me want to leave it parked,or sell it to fund my other toyota project.

It's tough with these old trucks...I have a rebuilt engine and carb, and I probably get between 12-14mpg in town, and top out around 20mpg on the highway. Most likely with my truck, it's a vacuum/emissions issue. I don't have any leaks (that I know of), but I'll bet there's some plugged up emissions stuff I should just disconnect. Or maybe that's just the best my truck can do...

I'm on 30x9.50's.

And I thought my 16 mpg mainly city driving with 31s was bad. I'm getting ready to replace the calipers, discs and rebuild the knuckles to see if mpgs improve.

Does the trip meter work? or is that what you're using?

no trip meter on my 82...my cluster was swaped after 06.
i have a service ticket in the glove box that states 197'000 miles.
odometer shows 109'600 as of now.

my 81 has a different style cluster...not sure what year cluster is in my 82 dlx.

i used my google maps to plot a 60 mile round trip, odometer only logged 20 miles for the 60 mile trip.
