What to look for in a new pickup...

I have been looking for a while and finally found a nice 88 Xtra cab that I am going to go check out. It has 170,XXX and the 3.0 V6 as well as a solid axle swap. My main concern is what should I look for on the motor? From what I have read so far the 3.0 seems like a piece of junk and it seems to have a lot of issues. What should I look for to make sure I am buying a truck with a good motor that should last me at least a couple years for daily driver duty?

Oh and in addition I was wondering if there were any typical issues of the pickups from this era that I should look for when I check it out...

The 3.0L in the smaller pickup isn't as much of an issue, IMHO. Yes, it's maybe a bit underpowered for a full size, but it isn't bad. Other than that, it's still a Toyota. It's still running after 21-22 years, after all.
