you know what you could do save up over the summer and then combine it with the 5 grand and you could do a 4bt or supra turbo swap that would be pretty cool combine both of your vehicles

woo pig sooie!!!
i would love to do that motor swap, but the reason im thining of getting rid of the supra is because the maintenence cost is killing me (having a 4runner and a supra to maintain goes deep into the pockets with gas at over 3.00 a gallon). I also need this to be a gradual thing, since this is my dd, a little bit at a time or over a long weekend would be great. Everytime i fix one thing another goes wrong. Given, the 7mgte is one hell of an engine (i've had no serious engine problems), but the car seems to be falling apart around it. The previous owners tore the thing apart...i mean come on, who uses hockey pucks and blocks of wood for engine mounts? Two years and almost 9000 dollars later, it is back to where a solid car should be...with way more in it than its worth, right now at least. Just goes to show, start with a solid car; don't buy a compete peice and try to turn it into the car of your dreams, you'll spend more on bringing it to where it was stock than you will ever be able to get back out of it. That is why i want to sink money into upgrading and maintaing my 4runner now. Sorry for the rant guys

jfreisner, you ever go 4 wheeling up in fayetteville?

Hockey pucks....lol. I would do the list of maintanence you have and throw the rest into a selectable locker. Curious, could you sell both vehicles and get a better 4runner and still have a little money left over (I'm clueless on 2nd gen resale values)?

mmmmm......sounds like what i wish i had. and i would have gotten one if it weren't for the full time 4wd.

They're not really "full time 4wd", the more proper term would be "awd".
They are not 4wd until the center diff is locked.

-Let's see, a '93 (FZJ80)would have the newer engine (lot's more HP and torque).
- Disk front and rear.
- Full floating axles, front and rear.
- Solid front axle (HP).
- Chance of selectable lockers (diffs, electric lockers), front and rear.
- Coils, all four corners
- Nothing hanging down from the underside any where near as much as the center xfer case/tranny and gas tank on the 4Runners.

Much, much, much, much better machine, "right out of the box" for both on and off road than the 4Runner.
DISCLAIMER, I have a '95 4Runner now that I've just barely started to build and have decided to get rid of it (and it's pristine) and get either a FJ or FZJ 80 and build that.
Much less that has to be done to 'em.

Fred

well, i could seel them both and have asbout 9 to 10 thousand dollars, but the rig i have now has never let me down. If i put some more money into it, it will be even more reliable and will start becoming the truck i have always wanted. I paid 5 for mine, and i figure i could get 5 or 6 for it.

Dude, don't poor all that money into that old truck. Automobiles are the worst investments. Spend your money wisely on mods you can take advantage of and save the rest.

Here is what i would do....sell both vehicles....buy a nice 3rd gen.....and put the rest into a high yield mutual fund....then when you graduate from college...you can use that money in a down payment for something better ie house, new car, grad school,....but what can you do, i'm a finance major lol!

you're in college huh, well how about hookers and cocaine?

save the money dude, or just sell both vehicles and get a newer 4runner or another rig that you will like better and be able to live with easier, I am assuming that you have a 3.0, so you are fighting an uphill battle from the begining just like a bunch of us, get a 3rd gen w/a 3.4 and an e-locker, you'll be happier and you will have taken care of two mods (more power and a locker) just by buying a newer vehicle

open a CD account at bank of america. its a high interest account that the minimum ammount to put in is 5,000 dollars. interest is about 4% now. use the interset to do little things to the runner.

dont waste any money on the 3.slow

if you are going to do a motor swap go ahead and do the 5vz 3.4

buy a good set of tires and fix the rest of the small things, or just give me the supra so i can fix mine!!!!

thats my opinion not like anyone wants mine

I checked into the 3.4 as a swap instead of the 4.3, if you want the HP{ and torque, and HUGE range of parts for the motor, and save money (not to mention you have to make a hood scoop or a 2 in body lift to fit a 3.4) then I'd recommend the 4.3 still. Plus the 5sp tranny is rated at 150HP, but since ill be doing an auto swap, th 700r4 is rated at 250hp. Another reason im doing the auto tranny is... its so much easier to drive on the trails, you dont have to worry about killing it plus, shifting to me has gotten old already

.. fyi, im not meaning to turn this thread into another 4.3 swap.. there is already plenty out there... so ill shut it now
