I agree that Chrysler, Ford, and GM will have to change a lot to keep up with toyotas sales and possibly their track record. If i was buying a new vehicle, I would not discount them from my options though.

Seriously? I mean really? Why did you buy one? Do you think you got screwed? You can't seriously come to a Toyota forum, and tell us that these trucks are nothing special, and act like they are turds. How many trucks have you seen have 265,000 miles on the original drive train? Why do you think they have higher resale?

It hardly ever breaks down
When it does its usually something easy
When it comes time to work on it, things are thought out MUCH better then on most domestic vehicles.
So they dont need to be worked on, and they are easier to work on
But like any car, you need to keep up on proper matenince. If you follow the proper schedule, your truck shouldnt give you any problems.
But you never know, you might have a lemon..
Heck my truck is made from a:
1991 frame
1992 axles (1993 diffs and gears)
1990 body
Its been rolled, crashed and abused. And she still keeps on going, and damn well!
I have a few domestic trucks in my family. And they defantly require more upkeep then mine, and when I do need to work on them... what a pain..

On my 1990 4Runner, there isn't a single button, level, knob, gauge, switch or light that doesn't work. On my cousin's 2000 the fuel gauge doesn't work, every couple months it doesn't start, it dies while driving. On domestic vehicles, the plastic feels cheaper than disposible food packets and the mechanical parts aren't built to last. I've worked on late '90s Chrystlers and the quality is pretty pathetic.
Considering the abuse 4wd Toyota owners dish out on their trucks often, you would expect to see threads about broken axles, twisted driveshafts, bent frames on a daily basis, but you don't. I tipped my truck a while back and all we did was tip it back up, and drive away. Aside from my crumpled sheetmetal on the side and roof, there was nothing bent or broken. Its also been in 6 accidents, and as far as some body repair, i cannot tell any mechanical repairs were ever made to fix accident damage.
Now, watch this (sorry guys):

Yeah but, look at toyota's lifespan. Thing is, you dont even need to "do" all the proper maintenance. The best thing is when it was -35, no ones cars would start at work. And my 20 yearold yota fired right up...

Every bit. I keep maintenance records on every vehicle I own. The interior on them started to squeek at about 20,000 and the dashes all cracked by 45,000. Longest lasting trans was 68,000, longest engine was 88,000. I have owned 25 vehicles in the last 14 years. I have had my Toyota for 8 years. The only other vehicles I have kept are my Mustangs. The Toy out lives them all. Give it time, and you will feel the same.

My brother worked for Schuman carriage for about...20 yrs before they closed down here. He used to always say how crappy GM cars are, from the caddy to the buick...rubbish. Even said Subaru was crap.
He drives a 97 4Runner, put a TRD S/C on....and the only thing wrong with it is the sag in the back. He bought a 08 Frontier NISMO package, rear end broke, took it off roading and the bed kept on hitting the cab and took off the paint. He hate's that truck already and is going to give it to my nephew since he'll be able to drive soon.

I guess that i will just have to wait and see. I am genuinely surprised that you had that many problems with the dodge pickups. I knew that the trans in them (i'm assuming they were auto) were weak and not to be relied upon. However, the trucks life does seem unnaturally short. What were they used for?

Every make has lemons, it's just that yota's have waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay fewer of them. Buy any 10+ year old S10, Ranger, Jeep, Durango, or any domestic mid size truck or suv, drive them hard for one year, no mods allowed (stock to stock), then ask the question as to why yota's seem to have the hype. Many of us came from the domestics and will NEVER go back.
And to add further to your (OP) hype question, the biggest reason yota's have the hype is due to reliability. Most all yota's, with few exceptions, are reliable. That is reason enough for me. If your yota has not been reliable, perhaps it is because of the previous owner(s) lack of caring, after all it's nearly 20 years old. What did you expect? Go pick up a 1990 S10, drive it for a year and then we'll talk...
Cheers

One of them had a 5 speed. They were work trucks, ran up and down the highway. The 5 speed was the only one to pull a trailer, every once in a while. I use the F350 for that. I own a home construction business. My 99 Z71 ate power steering pumps, went through 3 in 55,000 miles, and 2 a/c compressors in 75,000. It couldn't make it down the trails my ole 92 can, and it's (the Chevy) cv's are weak.

and yeah, I've seen NUMEROUS trans issues with Dodges... I don't even want to go there...
laying on my back in a parking lot putting an ex's Ram into gear cause the linkage broke, to towing my uncle's 2500 home after he lost every forward gear for some odd reason
