To answer ur question on how to bend ur bumper Belize Off Road Team just back into a stump did wonders for mine, this was after the trailer bent it, i now have a 1/4in steel bumper back there with a tow package and it works much better for towing and plowing over stuff

I have a question...
I often pull two motorcycles a little over 500lb's each, and a trailer about 350lb's.
and i notice NO diffrence with the trailer on or off, (with the exeption of starting off on a really steep hill)
by my calculations that is about 1400lbs, is this correct? Are you talking about how much the trailer + load weighs? or how much force it takes to pull the trailer forward?

And the starting and stopping (and long, steepish highway grades....and strong headwinds) are what's the hardest on the vehicle. Cruisin' along on flat surfaces you wouldn't probably notice much difference...if it all, like you say. While cruising, the weight of a load and trailer helps with momentum to keep you going. I don't notice much difference, either, in that case....except that I usually have to stay in fourth to maintain a decent highway speed. I stay around 50 with a trailer and/or weight...which helps if you have to stop quickly. But, living where he does (or where I do), flat ground is not all you will see. So, the whole picture is what you have to keep in mind with something like this.
I just want to say, I'm not "trying" to come off like the authority here. This is just been from experience over the past 15 years. And if someone wanted my opinion on towing, it's just what I would say.....from what I've noticed.

There aren't oil coolers for manuals. They don't have hydraulics/pumps or work on pressure. So, no way for it to circulate.

Personally i love the 22RE engine, easy to maintain and good gas mileage. Crappy for towing. i know people who have ripped off their bumbers towing no more than 100 lbs. They weren't screwing around or nothin either. My advice would be not to tow anything more than 500lbs. which isn't really anything. If you get a full towing package you should be good to go. Personally i don't think that the 22RE engine has enought power to be used for towing

Hey BoulderG. I'm in one of the next towns over.
I tow Dad's runabout boat with my '85 4Runner. Stock 22RE, 4.10 gears, 31" tires, 5-speed. The boat and trailer are 2200lbs. It's not bad at all on the flats. I just take it easy...just give it a little and wait for it to pick up speed. The truck doesn't seem to mind at all. I use low-range on the boat ramps. I just use a simple draw-tite 2" receiver hitch.
Here it is at Boulder Res....
hmmm....how do you get a bigger pic with those upload restrictions?!

You want real world information... My friend pulled 2000 pounds(buggy and trailer), 4 people(it is a 4runner), and turned 33 inch tires no problem up hills(45mph+). He is just re-geared to 4:88 and has stock motor with 5 speed tranny. You should have no problem towing a couple thousand pounds.

Huh?
I pulled a 3000lb 12ft pop up camper 65 miles into the GSMNP with no problem other than it bent the bumper a little. If you have to maneuver it just use low range. Mine pulled fine with the stock clutch, slow as hell but what can you expect. Ive also pulled a 10 foot trailer full of wood and a bed full of wood without any issue.

When i get my 4runner back together i hope to flat tow my little flatfender. I know i towed alot with my 6cyl 89 truck. It did a good job. The stock bumper i tore the heck out of, but then again it rusted so that didnt help. I am curious now to what makes the toyota 4cyl campers so special that they can pull the load they have. I know they have larger brakes for stopping, but for pure pulling, toyota made alot of campers with the 4 cyl and they seem to do fine, slow but fine.

my little 22re pulls my golf cart (600-700lbs) and trailer (200?) up to the mountains ok. and i say just ok. the truck is pretty much stock. i would really hesitate to pull more than that, personally. some hills i go up have me in 2nd gear for quite some time. highway is ok, but some of the long grades i have seen people giving me the finger. lets face it, on a good day the 22re had what, like 110 hp? mine hasnt had a good day in years im sure. my jetski has more horsepower than my truck
