smog deal
ok, so im in california unfortunately, but my question is, i heard that in order to pass i need to have the little heat shield deal over the exhaust manifold. problem is, i have a doug thorley header, which is ca legal. if this is true, anybody have any ideas on how i could mount it? thanks yall oh and heres a pic

I knew cali was bad with smog, but WTF does a heat shield over an exhaust manifold have to do with emissions? If anything your helping burn bad emissions out of the air without it. hahahahaha.
I'm with robert though, if the header is in fact CARB approved for cali and it does not come with a shield then you should be fine as long as you can proove it's CARB approval.
Don't be surprised if you get some smog idiot at the center that has no clue what CARB approval is and doesn't pass you cus he thinks he knows everything.

ok thanks for the replys guys. teuf, my brother said that it is a check on the smog list, and he said i would fail without it. the header is CARB legal, the number is stamped there on the header

the factory 22r had a tube that went from the heat shield to the air intake. when cold a vacuum operated valve, called HAI (hot air intake?) would open that would direct the intake air from that tube so that carb was getting air from around the exhaust manifold. it was warmer obviously so it made the carb run better, supposedly. i would think thats why it is part of emissions check.

doesn't make the carb run better, it makes it warm up faster. It eventually shuts that valve when it reaches a certain temp. IMO still not emissions related. Especially when the 22re's dont have a hot air pickup. It was replaced by the coolant lines in the throttle body.

this is why i love having no emissions! haha
why dont you just get some really thin sheet metal, drill some holes and bolt it to your header bolts for your test and then take it off when your done.

nope, 22r. i think i will go in and give it a try and hopefully ill pass. i think its 70 bucks for 2 trys so, well have to see how it goes

HAI isn't emissions either not directly anyway, if it was every 22r would have it, thats so the vacuum advance on the carb stays correct at higher altitude environments.

if its carbed its to send warmer air down the intake. i think it hooks to the bottom of the air cleaner, my friend has a carb and he did have to put that on to pass, he made his own. not sure how you would mount it on the header though.

The 22r (carb) has a heat shield that has a tac pipe that runs from the shield to the air cleaner. This pipe and shield has to be there because its part of the visual inspection and will fail if the shield or tac pipe are missing. The 22res dont have a tac pipe and there for dont need to have the shield. Depending on which smog tech you get depends on if you pass the visual or not. I looked up your header and you have the correct header for the truck but the instructions say it should have come with a hot air pickup pipe that is welded to the header for the tac pipe to hook to. It california it will fail smog with out this. I'm a licensed smog tech here in california so I should know.

Smog tech didnt catch it and passed it.
Since 87hillbillyyoter has a header he cant put the original heat shield on so he will need to weld a tac hookup to the header or get a heat stove kit from a header manufacture to make it legal in california but like I said some techs wont catch this.

has anyone seen my point? that shield bolt to the factory manifold iirc. the factory manifold has been removed and replace with a CARB legal header which has no provisions for that shield. I do not see any possibility how they can argue that not having that shield is illegal when the legal header removes it.

your thinking of HAC (high altitude compensation), the heat shield is related to HAI (automatic hot air intake). i verified in my fsm. i agree that since the header was CARB legal it shouldn't make a difference but i doubt all the inspectors have as much knowledge to realize these things.

lol hey thanks spokane, here I thought you were thinking HAC when it was me, anyway, just because they have no knowledge, doesn't mean they can just fail someone because they don't know, it is their job and responsibility to perform accurately based on current laws not just make them up as they see fit.
I wonder if such info would be listed in the CARB EO number for that header. Never had to look anything like that up, but it's got to be listed somewhere.
