well, went out and torn up a new field last night, and heres what i did. i floored it in 1st, turned the wheel all the way, and threw down donuts. had a good one that lasted about 30 secs of kick back from the limiter. got about 4 full rotations in. very nice. lol. kicked up a ton of dirt too. cant wait for some rain so it gets muddy. yea.

Ran it hard coming up the canyon today. Maintained 45-50 in second and 45-65 in third. I've actually become very impressed with the pulling power after doing this. With all of 116 hp and 142 lb-lbf. of torque, I was maintaining 50 mph in second up a 9% grade for about 5 minutes. I did find the limiter. It's at 30 mph in first and 58 mph in second with a W56 and 4.110:1 final drive. To answer notanymore's question, the limiter was introduced on the 1984 22R-E with TCCS EFI. It was not included on the carbureted or analog EFI engines.

Not really more power, it just runs better if you do it only occasionally. An engine will never magically develop more power than stock on its own. I run mine very easy most of the time, as I've said. But I've noticed that it idles and runs smoother and better than ever before after I've been running it hard on occasion. I've also become very impressed with the uphill pulling power of the engine (not towing, just moving the truck).

After I've been running my truck hard every now and then (on road in terms of speed and rpms, and offroad in terms of rpms), it purrs like a kitten and runs smoother and better than ever, except for maybe the first 10-20k. Thank you very much for all your more than excellent replies!

About once a week I will run my 3.0 pretty hard, shifting at about 4200rpms, and so far it is doing good. I wouldn't ever recommend hitting redline, a friend takes his 4 cyl jeep to the limiter quite often and with less than 80k miles his motor is having more issues than I am with over 223k miles on the 3vze.

So the point where it becomes harmful for the engine to spin any faster is a redline. Ive driven several RX7's and i KNOW on an RX8 its redline is 9000rpm and there is a fuel cutoff to inforce this
A standard internal compression engine will rev as fast as the distributer or whatever ignition will allow you to. It just becomes unsafe at a point and the pistons will shoot through the roof.

Anytime when you rev unloaded engine is harmfull. Do not do it.Ballance is a name of the game. Engines are usualy ballanced for power band, everytime you rev past that range you wear the components prematurely (well, if you go too low on gear you get similar wear..)
It is relatively easy to ballance rotary engine, crank engine are different. Equation is more complicated and you can ballance but for particular RPM range.
What is "redline" and rev limiter for? Just to protect from carastrophic damage.

Uhhh that is not from taking it the rev limiter that is from driving a Heep. I run my 3.slow pretty hard all the time. I'm a believer that how an engine runs is a direct result of how it's driven. Ever driven grandpa's Tacoma that has never been over 3 grand? I can about guarantee it'll feel like a gutless pig compared to one that has been ran hard it's whole life.

Ya I jump on mine all the time and It has 144 thousand miles, Burns oil like a SIV, 1 quart every 100 miles, and I ROMP IT OUT on the freeway, ITs so powerful the 3.0. got Mine to 250 Hp and Its lifted and burns off 35 inch tires in 2nd gear! I love it. FAST reliable, good on gas. I BEAT A FRICKEN BRAND NEW FORD ON THE FREEWAY TONIGHT! GO YOTA... I take it to 5000 RPMS alot. Too much fun and this 4runner will have a long healthy life. ALL ABOARD THE toyota RPM 5000 Train! TIC TOC
