Is it possible for a rear end that has Limited Slip to actually slip.

I am experiencing a problem that feels like the clutch is slipping. The clutch has about 7,000 miles on it. I dont think that the clutch is bad but it is possible. I am extremely easy on clutches and got 200,000 miles out of my last one in my 94 runner V6.

I changed third members 2 wks ago and put in Syntec fully synthetic 75w90 gear oil.

Since then I am experiencing this problem.

the rear end (3rd member) has limited slip but the LS does not work, on the lift it was acting like a non LSD. Only one wheel would spin and if I went real slow the other wheel would slightly go in reverse and then do nothing.

I am sure of the LSD being present, we were surprised the unit had one.

Once in a while while accelerating thru 3rd and 4th gear there is slippage as if the clutch was slipping, sometimes it does not though, even if I try to bring it on.

I need to know if a LSD can actually slip or be worn out enough that it will "slip" both axles at the same time.

Any input greatly appreciated.

LSD's have clutches in them and sometimes you have to put a friction modifier in the gear oil to prevent them from binding up. GM makes some, it smells like @ss.

Well, with one or both wheels up in the air an LSD will act exactly like an open diff - that's why people here don't often like them off-road. Do a search on that, but on a lift you can have somebody hold on to the opposite wheel to see if it seems to be working maybe but they take quite a bit of force.

If the LSD fails it'll act just like an open diff - won't slip like a clutch slipping so I don't think that's your issue there...an LSD or a Locker are both just an open diff with a mechanism in the middle to tie the two sides together.

What sort of LSD is it? If it's a clutch type you may need to run an oil with friction additives. edit: yeah, like he said! ^^^

I did throw in some kendall additive, and it does smell lots worse than @ss!!!

What did you put in it for a clutch.
Reason I ask is I got one a few years ago for my 88 Toyota from a local discount auto parts (VIP) and tried 3 different ones, had the tranny out 5 times, none of them worked properly, one slipped and 2 I couldn't get it into 1st gear. Ended up getting one from Napa. NP after that.
I did get pretty good at changing the clutch in one of these after that. lol 45 mins. start to finsih.

I would question if you even have a clutch style lsd....even worn out clutches offer casual resistance to both sides such that they should track each other when on a lift......sure sounds like you have an open rear. Are you sure it's lsd? Just because the case is a 4 pinion set-up does not make it lsd.
How did you determine the ls was present?

Clutch type LSD's tend to wear out fairly quickly. You can usually buy an aftermarket rebuild kit for fairly cheap. The clutch types typically do much better with the friction additive, especially when using synthetic oil in the diff.

If i remember correctly the additive is mostly moly

A LSD would not be causing the symptoms you are describing, and unless your on ice you dont have the power to sping a tire in 4th or 5th, so I would guess your clutch is bad.

I have to agree that the problem is probably the clutch. I have been driving stick shifts vehicles for 20 yrs and have had alot of experience with slipping clutches. this one is acting strange and the problem seems to go away (mostly)as the vehicle warms up after maybe 15 minutes of hwy driving. I did put additive in the rear and my drive to work had no slipping so I thout it was good to go BUT on the drive home it was slightly slipping again and less after half way home.

If I put my foot to the floor (gas pedal) and quickly "pop" the clutch it will slip and very quickly come back and grip.
Maybe it is on its way out and if so that is BS.
This is an OEM from toyota.
