ha, i hear you Jay.
I was talking to the guy who rebuilt my diff, and he said when he welds the rear, he takes the rollers out of pinon bearings, etc. sticks them in between some teet on the spider gears and welds them. IDk, i like the fact that the lockright unlocks in turns. but ive never driven a spooled truck so i won't comment on that.

My Lockright is completey fine for every day use. It squeels the inner rear tire in a turn if I am applying power (like from a hard take off during a right turn onto a street from a stop). It ratchets if I am not applying power or if I have the clutch pedal pressed in during a turn.
Since you are considering 5.29 gears it seems to me that you are going to go with 35's if you have a five speed. That seems more serious than most people would use for every day use. If you have an auto then you are going to be geared for 33's. Still pretty serious. If that is the case and you are worried about breakage then go with a Detroit. I know a lot of people with Detroits who drive on the street.
Biggest side effect to any full time locker other than the handling stuff I mentioned above is rear tire wear. If that is an issue then go selectable as mentioned before.

Still on the locker issue. I bought a 99 Taco with an E-Locker and drove around for a bit with it on. It seems it would be a PITA to drive with a full-time locker.
How would a full-time Detroit or Aussie locker drive on the streets everyday???

Like everyone says. Aussie says they will be coming out with the v6 rear every other month. DOn't hold your breath.
Lockright is practically the same as a aussie, but are actually available.
As for the detroit, id call around your local 4wd shops, they might get you a good deal!

If you are going to spend 1 second on slick/snowy roads go selectable.
My cruiser had the lockright, the back end would come around on you real fast. even in 4wd in the snow, I had to be ubercareful on the throttle to keep it going straight.
Plus the ratcheting is really annoying.
Many will disagree, but unless it is a trail rig, for anything but snow, don't waste your money on lunchbox lockers

i have an aussie in the rear of my 84 and i drive it all winter up here in alaska with 31x11.5 ltb's and it does fine, just had to sipe the tires for the ice and throw it in 4 when it gets really bad. yeah it goes a little sideways i have found mainly when starting out from a stopsign on sloped roads but just throw it in 4 and you are fine. i would love to have a rear e-locker but cant afford the locker gears and shipping( shipping on a locker is like 250 bucks for me!!!) and if i got an e locker i would probably put it in the front!

UPS lost my package with a geared locked 3rd!! So, I am just going to go the e-locker route because of drivability and OEM Toyota part.
I have gears for my 88 V6 rear already, do I now have to buy gears for the Tacoma or 4runner depending on which car the e-locker comes out of? Can the e-locker retrofit into my current 3rd member or do I have to use the e-locker 3rd? Someone is just selling the e-locker without the 3rd.
I am guessing it has to have the e-locker 3rd.
Thanks for all your help guys! This truck has been a long and slow process, and it just about to start moving!

Thanks! You going cable pull or using the electric motor?

Very nice. I got a source for a whole complete 97 rear end. I've been told on this board it is more of a pain in the ass to swap the rear out versus retrofitting the 3rd in my current rear end.

that would be driving around with a welded rear or a spool. when an e-locker is engaged it does not ratchet.
