How rare are 4.88 factory gears?
I just scored a set off a 94 Runner. I posted in a thread awhile back about how rare they are to me up here. Aside from the one other 4Runner in my yard that had 4.30's, all of the other trucks have 4.10's. I stumbled across this 4Runner in a local u-pull-it yard with 4.88's gear code G144. Of all the trucks I have seen, all of them but the two listed above had 4.10's. How rare are these gears anywhere else?

they are common enough that i was able to find 2 chunks to put in my '79 pickup. they aren't super common, but definitely not ultra rare either. the only downside is you can't regear the rear 3rds with anything other than the factory 4.88 gearset. lockers fit the carrier fine.

My 93 ext-cab came with them. They came on the vehicles with the 3.0/ auto tranny AND the 31" tire package in the area of 92-95. I think only the SR5s had the 31" tire package available on the pick-ups.

yes on both. V6, auto, and 31" tire package, that's what makes them sort of uncommon. 5 speed trucks with the 31" tire package got 4.56s, 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder.

the front takes normal 7.5" gears. the rear offsets the pinon to be able to use a thin ring gear compared to aftermarket R&P sets. that's why it can't be regeared with anything other than another toyota 4.88 set -- no companies make replacement gearsets for that particular diff.
to make it wierder, in australia(and other countries i'd imagine), you could get '79-83 trucks with 4.88 gears, but they were a standard 4 cylinder 3rd member and were regearable with aftermarket gears.

you can't regear a factory 4.88 3rd member to anything else, you have to get a "regular" V6 3rd. the factory 3rd member you have will work just fine in any 8" rear end, you just have to want to keep the 4.88s or be willing to swap 3rds if you want to regear.
i've got 2 V6 3rd members with factory 4.88s in my '79 4x4.
