I'm sure one of the experts here will chime in, but I would lean towards a little loud vs. not loud. Or, to say another way, I would rather have the valves set a little on the loose vs. a little too tight. If they are too tight, which I would think would be a little quieter, they would hang open a little, which would lead to burning your valves.

Just my thoughts, whether right or wrong!!!

Did you adjust them cold or warm and what settings did you use?

I adjusted mine (cold) when I rebuilt the engine a few weeks ago. They were noisy. I drove it like that for about 600 miles and then adjusted them "warm" this past Friday. The noise has totally gone away. I used .008 intake and .011 exhaust. I think the FSM says .012 for the exhaust.

Are you sure its not your injectors ticking? They can be quite loud...which is good...means they are working

Be sure you don't torque down the valve cover bolts too tight. That will cause louder ticking from over stressing parts. They really only need to be a little more than hand tight

My truck sounded like a diesel at one point.

X's 2 on the valve cover bolts; seen it twice now on the 22re; not on my truck, but friend's trucks

that's easy to check though; just losing the bolts while the trucks running. if it goes away, they were to tight...
