if you're on asphalt or dirt, gravel, other soft ground... use steel plates or some lumber under the jackstands to ensure they dont sink... i watched a truck twist its way off 4 10 ton jackstands cause the moron was on dirt... it happened in slow mo almost. luckily no one was under the truck.

a few options (many mentioned already)

1. dig a trench (not too deep)
2. use a log (you got a truck, go driving, find a big stump, get a log) wrapped in steel bands
3. big, heavy, strong jack stands (even used) are pretty cheap
4. the tires/wheels have always been my favorite, (it would still really suck being squished, but i think i could live a few more hours if the truck fell on the wheels laying sideways on the ground. i might get pinned, but i wouldnt be "flattened*
5. roll your truck on its side...(useally this happens as a last resort to get your wheels off your truck before the tide takes it out to see (seen it done in Mexico)

hope that helps

Are you kidding, Collier? A log that thick is not going to split being under a truck. I've been cutting and handsplitting my firewood for nearly 15yrs. That vehicle weight sitting on the log like that is not going to split it. It needs impact/shock and at the right spot or a lot more force than 3k+ lbs. And, don't worry about it being dried out, superbleeder. Seasoned wood is a lot harder. Just never use rotten or nearly rotten wood. But, that's just common sense.

And, I use concrete blocks all the time. Houses are built with them. If they're sitting up right and the pressure is on the right block surface, it's not going to bust provided there aren't any cracks in the blocks. Again, common sense.

Anyway, not trying to lambast or start an argument, but I had to differ.

BTW, Collier...please check your PM's, man. I need to know what's going on, if you please.

I won't get under a vehicle that is not securely on jackstands. If I didn't set the stands, I will personally inspect them and give it the "hip test" before I even think about getting under it. No how-no way. I saw a car fall on a guy when I was a little kid. It made a lasting impression on me.

That being said---Yes I do hate being under any vehicle on jack stands, not because I feel unsafe, but because it means I am squirming around under a vehicle when I could be kicken back with beer watching TV.

Yeah, zlathim....I know what you mean...lol!

Don't get me wrong, I said what I said, but logs aren't really the method to use. Jackstands....big ones...are primo. I give more than a hip test, though. I push on it with all my weight back and forth. If don't come down, it ain't comin' down.

Dude, safety first. Notice the welder off to the side. In an emergency you can split the lines, crank the amps, and get your defibulation on!
