i have a strap that is rated for 110,000 lbs... i got it from my old job when i was an ironworker...
then i just got an aluminum reciever hitch that has a D ring built into it...
havent ever had to use it, but its there... i got a spare if anyone wants to buy it...
also, i dont carry a blanket, but i usually have a spare shirt in the back seat, so i just douse it with water and lay it over the strap... whiplash from a strap put a dent in my brother in laws 85 crawler...

That reminds me of a guy in a little Bronco II (with lockers and 31 inch A/T's) that used to use a length of firehose that had been sewn into loops at the end. Down at the beach in Texas he'd pull up in front of a stuck rig, hook it up and leave some slack and then drive forward. Near the point where all the slack was gone he'd goose the throttle and then slam the brakes. The sudden "bungie" of the firehose would pull the stuck rig up and out about 2 feet. Just enough to get out of the hole. Then he'd collect his 20$ for pulling them out and go find another ding bat that got stuck. Guys were happy to pay him since the tow company that worked down there charged 100$ just to show up and take a look and then another 60$ to pull you to the street.

You'd be surprised how many people in 4x4's would hit the sand and once they started spinning would stand on the skinny pedal and get sunk. Of course telling them that steady throttle and aired down tires would prevent that usually fell on deaf/drunk ears.

yup, i've seen cable break.

like has been said before, strap. with no hooks, and get some recovery shackles. and definitely at least 20,000 lb test. i run a 30,000 test strap, and love it.

i have both... i use the strap for yanking trucks out when they are stuck, i use the chain for dragging deadfall trees back to camp.

The only way I use chains is if I have a tire in between them to take out the bounce. Chains CAN BREAK and when they do, they're deadly. Straps are much safer. Unles you're hauling trees, then by all means use a chain. Round here we use belgians to tow trees

Small screwdriver and a few minutes of your time.

I've yanked a truck so hard it bent my front tow hook and the strap was perfectly fine.

Chains are great if your truck has 600hp. Then you just slowley load the chain (get rid of slack) and just giv'r!

Straps are great because they stretch when you reef on them. Usually helps to get the stuck truck out.

Its a problem when you use a chain like a strap...

Sorry bud, but only reason I get stuck is because of loss of traction on something stupid. I NEVER need to yank...and a chain right now fits my bill way better. I WILL use the chain however for dragging crap if needed.
