body shop estimate
hey all
got into an accident last week and my beloved '92 is in need of some work. i know it's hard to estimate from pics but i would love to get a sense of how much this is going to cost me at the body shop.
here are the pics (scroll past the first, total of four)
if i could afford it, i would like to put a new (used) front clip (or at least the front and driver's side) because i don't want bodywork inside my engine bay. also looking at a new (used) fender, hood, bumper, grill, etc.
basically, here's a rundown of the damage:
- the hood is curled and pretty much a gonner
- the radiator is OK but the entire front (grill, lights on right hand side) got bashed in and is out of whack
- the right cab to frame mount is tweaked (though the frame was spared and seems like is still true.
- the fender is gone and, more important, the inside of the engine bay is crumpled up (right below the space where the airbox used to be).
any guesses as to how much is this going to hurt?

1200 to 1700. dont forget you get what you pay for...
try to get some parts at a junkyard, then install the parts yourself to save money, and all the body shop will have to do is match the paint

thanks for your help with this.
the damage on the truck was assessed and i have an offer from the insurance company. they basically decided to total it because of the age of the vehicle and are offering me less than what i paid for it (no surprise there) and they are coming within $200 of the 'visible' damage estimate given by the appraiser. assuming i can find a donor that's not totally lost to rust out here, i can probably fix the truck with the money they are offering and put it back to it's pre-accident condition but i am not entirely sure about the condition of the frame (which is the hardest thing to find clean out here).
if they would get closer to my purchasing price i might consider going that route and finding something else altogether but otherwise the only thing that makes sense is fixing the truck (which if repaired could be a nice vehicle again).
what is the best way to negotiate the figures at this point? i'd appreciate your thoughts.

You can get aftermarket parts cheap also if you are unable to find rust free. I tried scrolling to see the rest of the damage, but was unable. The damage doesnt look as bad you might think. A frame shop around here is actually more resonable then you might think. Alot of that you can do yourself. Hope to hear you get it back on the road.

Also if you take it to a frame shop and you let them know it is you doing it versus the insuarance, that can make a price difference. I was unable to see the frame, but they could tell you if it repairable.

i'd say anywhere between 1500-2500. Personally... I would buy a new hood, fender and replace the bumper with an ARB or some sort of aftermarket beefy bumper... install it all yourself then go get it paint matched... probably would spend a little less.

It's going to be a lot more than $1500 to do it correctly.
But then again, most people don't do it right
And if you love your truck, don't install aftermarket parts. If you don't care what it looks like, and want cheap quality thin metal and chrome that will rust after a few years, go right ahead.

i agree that $1500 was on the low end, specially because i do want to do it right. the only problem is that out here toyotas are fairly rare and when they are to be found, they have more rust than metal. the search is on for a donor i guess

i could have that fixed for ~$300
then get it paint matched at a body shop.....

theres absolutely NOTHING wrong with getting used STRAIGHT panels, grille, light, bumper, valence, fender, and hood. off of a Junkyard vehicle.
out here body parts are cheap...~$300 for all that.
okay so maybe if you need a new bolt or 2...~$302.......:wabbit:

quality only costs money because that is the way people work nowadays...to get a quality paint job..you have to pay big money for it....if i can do an excellent paint job in my drive way for roughly half of what a body shop would charge.....then what makes it NOT of good quality?

I bought a 2wd last year from a home improvement company and the left headlight bucket was over the tire and the radiator was on top of the valve cover. Deer damage. I changed everything but the cab. Doors/fenders/bed/hood/glass everything came off a donor truck of the same color($300 truck)
Its my DD now with everything working.
