thanks for the advice on the soon-to-be bad starter. too bad on the 4WD, it's a PITA to get out :pat:

I did a search and couldn't find anything close, so I'll tell the story.

the 6-speed ole girl has 310K miles on it. we had it since new and have done all the regular maintenance. She's been great!!!

the wife was out and about, called and was complaining about clicking noises and a hard thump. After a few questions, I arranged to meet her.

I get in, start it up and it was clicking like crazy. It sounded like an electrical short. It was clicking while in gear with the clutch engaged. I took a short lap around the far end of Costco's lot and after 50 feet-- THUMP-- It sounded like somebody was hitting the front right tranny with a mallet .

a few quick tests determined that the clicking and thumping stopped in 4WD. and came back while in 2WD. So I was able to limp the ole girl home

I can do basic to medium stuff, but tranny's are out of my league.

any suggestions as to the problem???

ah 4runners are only 5 speeds i thought? anyways i'll state what i've learned.. if it's an auto tranny then i'd look into changing the fluid. first check the dipstick on the tranny to make sure that you don't have any metal shavings. if you do then ur hose and gonna have to get a new tranny no matter what. people have actually said that if you see shavings, don't change the tranny fluid because then the tranny's not gonna work at all, whereas at least you'll still get a little while off the tranny w/o a fluid change. dunno but it's proven.

now if it's a 4wd issue i'd look into the tansfer case and see what you can find there.

Despite what your math tells you, its a 5 speed....

Are you sure the xcase was all the way in 2wd. I have heard a similar sound when the xcase lever is half way from 2wd to 4wd.. I would check to make sure there isnt anything in the area that could be blocking the boot.. this would also explain why it goes away in 4wd.

and what is the deal with a bad starter???

without climbing under and having somebody change from 2WD to 4WD , I'd say yes, it's all the way in 2WD. But, I'll double check. thanks for the tip.

bad starter??? the ole girl is old. 310K out of an OEM starter is not too shabby. Actually, it probably just needs a kit to repair the contacts. it's still a PITA to get in and out.

Do you know about the access panel in the front right wheel well to get to the starter? I found out about it the hard way, myself, but it makes changing the starter pretty easy.

I am still confused about the front in front tranny???? Please explain a little better.... there is only one tranny, and as you havnt diagnosed the problem (sounds more like a xcase problem to me) I doubt you referenig to what needs replacment???

ok if it was a 2wd only, would I be talking about the front tranny??? I doubt it. as there would not be a front drive shaft.

Dude, it's a front DIFFERENTIAL not a transmission...

...and x3 on the 5-speed, NOT a 6-speed...

quick lesson....

the things in the front and rear that spin the tires are call axles, in the middle of them are gears in the differential. They are connected by driveshafts to the transfer case or xcase..the xcase gives you 2wd or 4wd, or 4lo. The xcase is bolted to the transmission which is a 5spd, these are the normal gears you use to drive around in every day....

so... where is your problem now that we have had a nomenclature class???

thanks for the info. just got off the phone from the "pro" (since I'm a wrenchin retard) a switch up front has gone bad and was shorting out and trying to make it jump into 4wd. we're going to keep it disconnected until the special order part arrives.

OK, they unhooked the ADD Indicator switch located on the left of the ADD Actuator in the front. the ole girl now does now try to engage the 4WD. But, the ADD Relay still is clicking like crazy.

The orginal "Thump" was the ADD trying to engage the system. With the band aid in place, it's time to find the real problem.

( plus, it's nice to have a print out of the ADD system ) ( which can be a big problem in my hands )

Possible problems.

1. ADD Solenoids
2. ADD Relay
3. ADD Actuator

the ADD Indicator switch needs to be replaced.

removed fuse 15, the ADD system, and the windows and ac shut down

unplugged the solenoids, it's still clicking at the relay. Time to remove some plastic and find that relay on the steering column.

if the solenoids are unplugged, why is the damn 4wd trying to engage??? the solenoids control the actuator??? right???
