'91 3.0 dying on me, starting to leave stranded HELP

I've had this 4runner for almost a year and had no problems until last night;here's some details:
-idles smoothly (about 800 rpm)
-motor revs correctly if I give it gas while out of gear
- when in gear the sputtering/cutting out are occurring on take off in the low r's, but if I can make it through the rough patch without completeley sputtering out I can drop the hammer and it will run
-also died on me a couple of times when I let off the gas while coming to a stop light/ attempting to turn.
It is a '91 4Runner 3.0 auto with 86k(160k on body) and a reman trannie.

It really sucks because I've just started to add some very modest upgrades(CB,K&N, Roof Rack, etc.) and now it's not gonna run!

Check the areas of the mods first; any recent change which results in driveability problems points to that change. First thing I'd check is open the hood in the dark and rev it slightly while looking for any spark jumping/grounding out. Double check you are getting good spark to all cylinders if you have no arcing.

What exact K&N mod did you do? If it's the filter only, I'd personally chuck it and go back to OEM. Keeps more dirt out & fewer problems overall with practically NO change in power/economy.

The second thing I'd check for is a vacuum leak. Take an UNLIT propane/MAP gas torch & go around the vacuum connections; any change (increase) in idle shows a vacuum leak. There are a BOATLOAD of vacuum hoses on these suckers!

Thank you for the insight-- I recently installed regular K&N filter and drilled the air box, but thats been a week or so ago; I did notice that the 3-4" rubber tube going directly into the air intake plenum had a hole I can stick my pinky into, for which I used to add seafoam to the motor! I'd be interested in going ahead and repl., but I don't know the exact name, and my dealer hates to fool with you unless you know EXACTLY what you want or have part #'s

Take it off and go to NAPA with it; they can replace with a suitable generic vacuum hose.

Wait a minute; are you talking about the intake tube that's about 3 inches in diameter? If so, THAT is your problem!! i'm surprised it will even run!

A dealer replacement is pretty dang expensive (@ $90) but I saw one on eBay the other day for $50 or thereabouts.

Yes, it is about 3" in dia., and it is split right near where it is clamped on to the intake and almost runs all the way to where the PCV ?? hooks into it-- that's gonna make my day if that is what it is... thanks again. What would be the proper term for searching this part on ebay?

Mine developed a crack, so as a stop-gap measure (nobody laughs at my puns) I squirted some silicone sealant into the crack a while back. It worked so good I forgot about it.....

But I wonder if the crack opened back up and is causing my stumbling problem. Time to pop da hood.

well, I don't know yet--it should be here sometime next week, but I did go ahead and pull the old one and I found even more cracks! I'm feeling pretty sure this will fix it, but I've gone ahead and bought plugs/wires/dist. cap/rotor button/fuel filter in hopes that will help it too.
