I have a 90 toyota 4runner. tailgate opened when i bought it, nothing has happened since the day i bought it. now all a sudden, i cant get the tailgate open. i try the key and it dont wanna turn and i dont wanna break the key off. the inside lock latch...i pulled it up and the rod thats attatched to it came out with it! wtf? i dont wanna get in their and try kickin it cause it has the glass in it. the glass does go up n down from the switch on the console. am i missing a hidden lock button or something or is thing genually jammed?
if it is jammed as i believe it is..anyone know what i gotta do to open it? short of the jaws of life. i cant disassemble the dang thing cause it wont open. i need this thing to open as i play in a band and i need this to haul my gear.

its stuck in the locked position.... you have to re-attach the linkage to get it unlocked..... thats what it sounds like to me

You can disassemble the rear tailgate when its closed. First I would bring the window all the way up. Climb in the back of your truck and remove the carpet part of the tailgate ( its just a bunch of pop out rivets that hold it in place ). Then remove the black cover covering the motor and holes( phillips screw driver if I remember correctly ) and you should see this ( see picture ). then your going to have to put the lock and rod back in there ( pain in the ...). When the door is locked it prevents the door handle from working.
