That's not THAT bad in my opinion. I do however think the 3vze cruises better between 2250 and 2750 RPM's on the highway, but anything above 2000 RPM's should cruise descently with this engine.
My experince with the 3.0 auto was very different, it couldn't pull itself against the wind resistance of 70mph in that rpm range in OD, just not even close to enough power. Now if you have 300 hp its a whole different story.

Although that calculator is very useful, in my case those values only apply to a certain degree, because it's also a matter of whether the engine has enough power to hold those given speeds at the rpms given by the calculator. The calculator said that it will do 101 at 3,000 rpms with 4.10 gears, but I'd like to see anyone with an automatic 3.0, 4.10's and 33's get it up to 101, let alone at 3,000 rpms. My experience has been much more like that of mt goat. It was a lot better at holding speed back when I had 31x10.50's though. Since I can't afford an engine swap, I'll probably just regear it in the next few months. As long as I can hold 75-80 in od and get decent gas mileage (15+ mpg) while doing it, I'm happy. As long as I'm getting decent gas mileage I don't really care what rpms my engine is at on the freeway. The only problem I have with cruising in 3rd on the freeway currently is knowing that I'm only getting about 10 mpg when doing it.

Really... you only get 10 mpg in 3rd gear? Before my engine swap I had to make a trip out of state and was mostly in 3rd gear the whole way, I got about 15 mpg on the highway in 3rd gear running 65-70 mph and 3500-4000 rpms.

Throttle position is a fact. At 70 I run 3000 RPM with 32x11.5xR15 but because of the torque of the 3.4 swap the throttle is barely open and I get 19 mpg with my 5 speed.

My 2wd auto does the overdrive thing in and out depending on the headwind.
