4.10s to 4.30s Worth it?
I'm seriously considering buying some gears for my truck. 90runner has a set of 4.30s in good shape for 200 shipped. I need some words of wisdom...I've got 31s and 4.10s now. I just need a little more oomph on the interstate and I'm not sure if the 4.30s will do it or if I should get 4.56s. New gears will proabably be 260 +shipping if not more. What do you think I should do?

4.30's would probably give you enough freeway oomph, plus 4.30's would allow you to clear up to 33's and maintain about stock preformace.
4.56's would mean you're good up to almost 35's. So if you're going to stick with 31's, these would suck you're gas milage right down the toilet. You'd be good off the line, but probably bump your freeway RPM up over 500RPM. But if you're going to 33's, these would be the way to go.

Deffinately not worth the money to buy or the install as an upgrade. I would think about this:
-what size tires do you think you will run on this runner in the future? 32s, 33s maybe if so then you just wasted all that work and money on the 4.30s.
-I would suggest that you get 4.88s even if your gonna stay with 31s for a while. They are not much more money and you'll turn any size tire up to 34s with little problem.
-4.88s suit the engine better as the 2.4 loves to rev. Toyota designed that engine to operate at 80% of its peak power output consistantly with little or no problem. You may even experiance better milage then with 4.56s with 31s as some have experianced.
-Crawl ratio will be much better as well with 4.88.
Deffinately not enough of a difference between 4.30 and 4.10 to justify the time it takes to change the oil.

Remember he's got a 22RE, not a 3.slow
Ok, yes, my in head math was a bit off:
31's w/ 4.10's going to 35's => need 4.62's
31's w/ 4.10's to 33's => need 4.36's
I think 5.72's might be a tad excesive, especially if he wants to drive it on the freeway.

Proabably gonna stick with 31s for a while. I may go up to a 33x10.50 one day, but that'll be a while and if I don't like it I'll bump back down. I just cant seem to make up my mind....
actually, I doubt I'm gonna ever go up to 33s....Anybody ran 31s with 4.10s and then 4.56s? Most of my driving is on the highway and off road, very little city anymore.
As it is right now, I can barely run 5th gear without loosing momentum on hilils and I have to push the pedal way more than I should....I think any change would make a increase on my mileage. I'm just not sure if $200 shipped is a good enough deal to make me settle for 4.30s or if I should just wait and get 4.56s.

4.10 gears are for the standard 28" tire and 5spd. Early 22re autos came with the 4.30 and 28" tires.
5.29 for 35" tires and a 5spd is very close to the stock ratio not to mention the added rolling mass of the larger tire requiring more torque to turn.
There should be nothing wrong with 4.88s and 31s at freeway speeds with his setup, nothing at all in fact he may get better milage then with 4.56s and deffinatly better all around performance then 4.10 or 4.30.
3.0 isn't a wonder of modern technology but it does have 35HP more then the 2.4 and you deffinately feel it, I know I've owned both.
Finally if you do put in 4.88s and then when the day comes to get new tires you will at least get 32x10.5s and never look back.
Regearing is not a small job at its easiest so make it count.

Also note: with your current 4.10 and 31x10.5 tires your speedo is 10% off and will be traveling 66mph when it reads 60mph. Kinda hard if you get a ticket and don't know about that, just a FYI.

For 31's, I'd go minimum of 4.56's and more likely 4.88's. 33's would be 4.88's minimum and consider 5.29's. 4.30's aren't worth anything, especially $200 for a set of used gears.

i've got 30x9.5s and i've considered swapping up to 4.30s. mainly because they aren't sought after at all, and i could most likely pick up a matched front and rear set for less than $150.
my truck drives fine with the 4.10s, but it'd be nice to have a wee bit more kick.

I think I'm gonna say no to 4.30s and wait for 4.56s. Considering that the majority of my driving is Highway, I will proabably need it to not sit as high on the revs. Thanks for the advice guys, proabably saved me 200 bucks.

Go with 4.56s. My setup is 4.56 with 31" tires and 22RE/5 speed. It is really the best overall gearing you will get. Going from 4.10 to 4.30 is only 5%, hardly worth the small change.

damn, maybe i should keep the gears for myself 35's with 4.10's yay. oh well, ive no complaints, ive got a speedometer on my gps and they arent all that bad, keep gas milage down compared to gears as tall as 4.88's. well, regardless they're still for sale
