2nd gen e brake handle in 1st gen

I have an 89 4runner with an ebrake handle that is worn. I was wondering if it is possible to put the later push button style handle into a first gen. I searched but couldn't find anything relevant.

I would guess as long as you install every thing that goes with it including the front cable .

it most likely will not be a direct fit but with some thinking it should be possible.
