1994 4runner stock speaker sizes & upgrades? - searched

So I just got my runner back after a massive can of worms under the hood. I figured it finally might be time to upgrade the sound system in it.

First off, what are the speaker sizes?

2nd, I was considering putting 6x9's in the rear by cutting into the plastic and fitting them in there. Anyone have any luck with this? (i don't want any rattling so this may be an issue w/ 200 watts to each.)

3rd, Where have people been putting their amps? I want it out of the way so it doesn't get touched but its gotta have airflow.

4th, Where have people been adding speakers? The doors are an obvious, but how do they fit in there?

5th, Pics would be awesome. After all, a picture's worth a thousand words.

5.25" is stock in rear. I have pioneer 4" up front and alpine 6x9's in the cubbies in the back. They're powered by an alpine cde-9845 HU.... I'll post some pics in a few minutes

go with something like this for the front http://www.cardomain.com/shoplist~t~...nel+Enclosures and ether put a set of 6x9s in boxes over the rear wheel wells or mount a set of 6-1/2'' in the doors need to do some cutting though and where to put the amps on the back seats work good for speakers depends on your budget i have real nice set of jbls in my doors just take in mind it took me about 13hours to install everything as i had to run new wires for the amp and new speaker wire for the front doors

Honestly, if you don't have tailgate parties or spend extended periods in the trunk with your girlfriend/wife, the rear speakers would be kind of a waste. I'm getting ready to break down and put a 6x9 in each door and mount an amp under the front seat... I listen to classic rock so it's more than adequate for me...

Dont mount them in the door. You have to cut the door shell first off, and second they just rattle around because you can only attach them to the thin door panel unless you custom fab surrounds. PLus those door speakers just look tacky and never last very long.

sine you have a 94, i would look into the kick-panel speaker panels for your truck. I believe crutchfield sells them, and they look really nice. not to mention you dont have to cut anything out, and could return it to stock if you sell the truck.

thanks for the advice. mounting them in the door sounded like some ghetto rigging to me... think i'll just replace the stock 4" and 5.25" and possibly pick up some of those kick panel enclosures.

sux to have to spend $130 on some enclosures but it'd be well worth it to have good sound up front rather than compensating in the back. anyone have these installed? says that they recommend 5.25"ers but can fit 6.25"ers. any recommendations?

sounds like i'm gonna have to rock an amp too. here's the deck i'm looking into

ooo very nice. the other place i've gotten stuff in the past was onlinecarstereo.com. recently i've been leaning towards crutchfield because even though they're a little more expensive, they tell you that they're including harnesses, speaker mounts etc. not sure i'd get all that with the other sites but i'll look around. i think i'm gonna wait on the deck because i'm realizing that the deck i have is working fine and really no need in a new one. but here's what i'm looking at
-x2 Polk db650 6-1/2" 2-way Speakers
-Q-Forms Kick Panel Enclosures for 6-1/2" components
-Kenwood KFC-1061S 4" 3-way car speakers
-Kenwood KAC-8402 60W x 4 Car Amp
-and to hopefully make it easier: EFX 8-gauge Amplifier Wiring Kit

lemme know what you think

geez someone know's how to find stuff cheap. lol thanks man. didn't realize car domain had such good stuff. i think i'd probably get those kick panel enclosures cause it'd be nice to have the sound where i am and i don't want to ghetto rig something that's just gonna rattle around.

2nd generation 4runners(1990-1995) have 4" speakers in the front, and 4" speakers in the back. I once thought of how to upgrade the system in my 1994 4Runner, but I figured I'd rather wait untill I buy a newer one. For the back, with some trimming to the plastic panels, you can get away with mounting 6.5" speakers, and It won't look bad, and will sound better than a 6X9 speaker. What ever you want to do, Good luck, I hope this helps.

I also heard that some 2nd Gen 4Runners came with a CD player from the factory, and an 8 speaker system. I've called the dealership about this, and they confirmed it. I have never seen one with a factory option for an 8 speaker system, and I have no clue as to where they go. My guess would be the standard 4 speaker system is in it's correct place, and two more speakers are in the rear doors, and there must have been some tweeters or something on the pillar between the rear doors, and the rear side windows.

Hrmm might be too late on this but I think I may have one of those but I've not had a chance to figure it out. I know my front are 4" and rear are either 5.25 or 6.5 I can't remember. I got upgraded 4" kicker's in the front, amp under the drivers seat...it does get hot but not that bad (I live in 100+ degree temperatures as well). Then I got a sub behind the passenger as not many people ride in my rig its like 10" kicker. That's all the sound I need I don't even hear the rear speakers though I thought about upgrading. I also noticed an enclosure above my rear door that looks like it may have speakers. I need to poke around and confirm this.
