1986 22re rebuilt and now dead!!!!
Ok, I'm quite a newb here but I've owned this 4runner for 20 years , I'm somewhat familiar with it but not to much, I recently had the head cavitate and cause the gasket to blow. I installed a new head, bolted up everything, set timing as close as I could initially and plugged up everything and put on new vac. lines. Put in a new battery and expected it to atleast turnover... IT DIDN'T. In fact all it did when I turned the ignition was turn on the fuel pump.
The lights all work and when I hit ignition they do not dim as if there were a major draw on the battery. So I checked the starter, its fine, I replaced the brushes with new ones anyway, still dead.
I can easily turn the engine over by ratchet on the crank pulley, so my question I suppose is...... what electrical gremlin do I have?
ONE NOTE HERE..... the truck did set for a year before I began the repair... and my lazy arse didnt drain the gas when i parked it so after the rebuild I drained it and installed a new fuel pump and filter just to avoid future problems.... could setting that long sieze up a relay somewhere?
Thanks in advance to anyone who answers!!!!!

thanks bud, I didnt have a meter when this all began so I couldnt check that or anything else really, nor did I have a fsm, I just downloaded an electronic version and so I feel a little better equipped to tackle the gremlin... I'm comfortable with the mechanical stuff but engine electrical systems just baffel me!!!!! that and auto tranny's!!!!
I do know that the engine will turn over if I supply voltage directly to the starter, it won't even attempt to fire because " i don't know why" 8^) but the starter will crank the engine over like that. I'm relay hunting in the am I suppose!

Is the CEL illuminating when you turn the key to ignition? Not to the start position, but the ignition position. And, I don't mean flashing a code, either. The CEL is supposed to illuminate at the IG position letting you know power is getting to the ECM and the IG circuit is complete.
