W56 transmission overtravel and return to center

Hey guys, just traded my YJ for a slightly built 85 4runner.

I have a a W56 transmission in it, and I seem to have too much play from what I can tell.

I just replaced the shifter seat, and ball seat with the marlin crawler stuff, and that got rid of a lot of idle play, but the total travel from left to right seems way outta whack.

When I go far left to far right, the travel is about 10-12", and the little cup over the spring, but under the retainer plate (have a picture, can upload if need be), seems to pop out as well (the piece doesn't look worn, but doesn't look proper), and takes a little jiggle to get it back in order. The total left to right travel, without having the cup pop, is about 6" which seems a bit more normal.

My question to you guys is any explanation? I kind of assume there will be some detent pins and springs inside that might be shot, but I really dont know, so I thought I'd ask the pro's first! haha

Also, if anyone wants, I will throw some pics up of my newly acquired offroad toy.

Thanks in advance everybody!
