Rough Idol 22RE
1985 4Runner 22RE is running like crap. Pulled the codes and it gave me 5 blinks(02 sensor). Replaced yesterday hoping this would end my troubles. I adjusted the idle speed and took it out for a drive. Stopped at around 3-4 miles to see how it was idling. Idle was to high so I adjusted it down to 950 RPM's. Figured all is well. Start it up this morning and idle is around 1200 for cold start. About 10-15 sec later it starts to drop to 950rpms. Take off for work. Stop at a stop sign a few miles down the road and it idles around 550 ish. Idling rough at every stop on my way to work (17 miles). Get to work and its idling at 950rpms and seems smoother. Same symptoms before chaning out the 02 sensor. Any ideas on what going on?? Pulled a plug the other day and it had a white powder like residue. Running lean, vacume leak from what the book reads. Looked for a leak and could not find one. Though replacing the 02 sen. would solve the running lean part. Also checked the AFM, throttle body and all seems fine. Replaced the fuel filter 25000 miles ago new fuel pump about 5000 miles ago. Please let me know what else I can check or look for.
Thanks for your help!!

throttle position sensor? thermostat? coolant temp sensor?
oh, and idle should be ~750 warmed up.
but you cleared the code after replacing the sensor right?
have you tried pulling codes again?
and white ash-like deposits is not anything particularly worrysome yet. NO deposits would worry me.

Your problem sounds very much like what I am dealing with. So far I have had little luck, but I did notice a slight improvement after adjusting the throttle stop screw as per my Haynes Manual (Page 145 - 146). It says the vacuum port should be barely visible and mine was way more visible than the illustration showed. So I adjusted it and the idle screw, but still need to adjust the TPS. The idle doesn't wonder as much now, but still idles rough below 950 - 1000 RPM. I used a mirror to see the vacuum ports at the top of the T.B. I adjusted the screw so mine would set as close to the ports as it apeared in the illustration.
The Haynes Manual does warn that you should not make this adjustment unless absolutely necessary.

I'm sure its coolant temp sensor if after you drive it abit and it warms up and runs like garbage it might be coolant temp sensor. Uh and 900 i about good for a 22re 750s a bit low. IF its running lean get an O2 for sure. My be your mass air flow. When its idling bad get out of the truck pop the hood and beat on the mass air flow and see if it stops acting up. if it does then you know you need an mass airflow if not then prolly coolant temp. Is it running hot at this bad idling? if so then try the thermostat.
