lower timing chain guide sheared...bad?

lower timing chain guide sheared...bad?

in my attempts to remove the timing chain cover (i used the starter method) the chain rolled up around the crank and busted the lower sprocket guide.
Do i HAVE to get a new timing cover, or can I live without it?
