i have done it to my 89 and my 81.... I sell an HID kit that comes with your choice of bulb type (you'll want H4) you choice of color temp, and either a 35w or 55w kit. prices start at 80 bucks for hte full kit with a life time warranty.
you'll need to get the H4 conversion kit from ebay, to convert from sealed beam to H4 bulbs.

Try the Hella or Bosch H4 conversion kits... I've used the bosch kits on my last 3 vehicles very good quality price (just over the border for you) at CT was around $90cdn (note they are still available but may be a special order item not all stores stock them anymore). The Bosch come as a pair with hi/lo bulbs included, The hellas come individually with no bulbs price varies.
Both of these are E-code lenses which have a slightly different [more efficient] light spread pattern than the DOT code... don't worry no cops will know the diff. unless you tell them... and if you need an inspection thing they probably won't catch it either... proper aiming is critical though especially if you add the HIDs...
edit: thanks for the link below rich... looks like the hella conversions there are DOT code after all.

I recommend you get some Hella 72200 housings and just put them in with the bulbs they come with.
HIDs tend to be a heatscore around here, and can sometimes get you an inspection notice for stuff that's marginal on your truck.
If you need more lighting than the Hella H4 conversion gives you, then install a set of headlight relays. Still need more light? Get brighter bulbs. But do it in that order, otherwise you're wasting time and money, and may burn out your headlight switch.
To re-iterate:
1. Hella H4 conversion kit part#72200 with 55/60w bulbs
2. headlight relays (a stereo shop can wire it lickity split if you cannot)
3. brighter bulbs
I know a few guys that got tagged with vehicle inspections for other stuff like tires sticking out, etc, after they got their HIDs. When they put halogen bulbs back in they were less obnoxious, and haven't had issues since.

Hmmm. Well it could also be the housings that i have. I have the euro headlight housings, which make the light shine higher than regular housings. That could be why i dont have the line

I just recently installed an HID kit I got for my birthday, and put them in with the upgraded crystal headlights that come on the 99's, I have a 97 and it makes them extremely bright.
I don't mean to blast people, but lately people wait for me to pass then try to highbeam me...too funny.
My beam pattern doesn't have a cut off either

the cut-off has absolutely nothing to do with being real HID or not. It has to do with the housing. HID Kit's should not be used in a regular housing. This causes glare which is why people flash their brights at you. The only "correct" way to run HIDs as a main headlight/fog is to use a projector housing which is what causes the cut-off pattern.
I am one of those guys if someone comes up behind me with those stupid HID's in a reflector housing I will slow down and ride your ass with my Sylvania Silverstar 6054 sealed beams (which I am perfectly happy with) brights and 100w fogs on. By they way my Highs and lows stay on together. Luxury with having them wired through relays.
Please if you guys are running HID's in reflector housings have the common courtesy to stay back from someone so you don't blind them. It is not only ignorant it's also illegal in the US
Don't get me wrong about not liking HID's, I just converted my BMW lights to HID's but I used a projection conversion on mine.

Round eye housings with standard bulbs on low beam
And with HID bulbs on low
I have them aimed on the low side, never been flashed by anyone. I've also asked friends to let me know when I was behind them, if they were to bright. No complaints from any of my friends either. Buy a quality housing and take your time to aim them.

On my truck i adjusted the lights to point dawn ward a little so i don't blind anyone. They still put out great light and they are way way better than what i had before. Money well spent IMO.
