its actually not working very well. my motor has apperantly been rebuilt but i can't confirm this and the speedo is broken so i have no idea on milage either but i'm speculating about 3yrs or less then 30k on the motor and....i can pull any hill in 5th with two cute girls, big dog, 4 surf boards (ya, they're light but lots of drag) and full gear so the motor is strong. passed emissions with straight pipe too. but....it burns about a 1/4 or so of a quart every 300miles. hence my wantingto go 20w50.
just wondering what is recommended and what you're guys running. wanted to do the oil change today.

i run straight 50 in my yotas. but the coldest it gets here is the low 70s anyway what about 10w-40? i recall living up in WA and it being damn cold in the winter. i wouldnt want to have to light a fire under my car to start it in the morning

i don't want to run synthetic. don't want it to find leaks, don't want it to burn more and don't want to pay $6/per quart.
yes, in the winter it can get below freezing, sumer as high as upper 80s. i'd say average is high 50s or low 60s.

i personally run 20w50 in mine, but im going to experiment once it starts getting cold with 10w30 again, since yeah, i dont want to light a fire under the car to get the oil warm enough to circulate. in your case, what id try is this: go a little heavier every oil change. what someone reccomended to me once is to put 4 quarts of 10w30 in it and put about half a quart of 20w50. if it still burns or leaks, go to 3.5 quarts of 10w30 and 1 quart of 20w50. and so on until it doesnt leak or burn much anymore. maybe you might want to try it. just DONT mix synthetic with dino oil. ive heard some bad stuff can happen.. so havent tried it..

sounds like a good idea except i don't want to play oil scientist. this should not be rocket science. i'm ok with mediocracy or "close enough", and i certaingly don't have the time (or space to keep 10 diff types of oil) to experiment with custom oil coctails.
basically i need to know if i should run 20w50 or not? if not, what do you recommend other then the 10w30 i'm currently running which the truck burns.

ok try 20w50 and see how it works for you. if its too heavy, go back to 10w30 and use half and half. half 10w30 half 20w50. or maybe try that liquid tune up stuff, the engine restore stuff or w/e its called.. i used it in mine and i think thats why it stopped burning oil. im swearing by this stuff, im gonna use it every oil change. ok actually test right now. go buy that stuff, put it in ur oil, fill ur oil back up to full, and drive it a couple days. if it doesnt stop burning, put 20w50. if it does, stay with 10w30 and use the stuff. i found it at autozone for 5 bucks

My 22re loves 15-40 diesel oil. Thick enough to do its job quietly, but doesn't cause and issues at lower temps, even down in the teens. To boot, diesel oil keeps the internals pristinely clean.
Toyota recommended 20-50 for these motors until the early 80?s (about 1984) for emission reasons only. These motors have very loose tolerances (which is the key ingredient to a long lasting motor) straight from the factory and they require thicker oil.

First I would try a quality oil in 15w40 like shell rotella or chevron delo and see how that works. 20w50 seems a little thick for the winter. Quality, not just weight of motor oil has a lot to do with the loss of oil.

i have heard of that royal purple stuff, but i am wondering how good it is..
i use castrol gtx high mileage now, and pretty much always have. i have 20w-50 in it now becauase it got to like 115 a month ago... now in another month, it will start to get colder, and frosty..
you guys reminded me i need to get the 10w-30 ill try that and see how much leakage i get.
i wanted to ask, what was that cleaner that stops the oil from burning? anyone else try that? would you recommend that stuff?

I'm running 5w30 Mobil1 synthetic right now but that won't work for your situation. If I were you, I would run 10w40 and add a little Lucas oil stabilzer. I've done this on several toyota and suzuki's over the years that were using a little oil and it worked like a charm. Good luck.
