show me a documented case of somebody installing aftermarket gears in a 4.88 factory chunk, and i'll believe you. it cannot be done, at least without specially made gears(which don't exist at this point).

4.88 i have to regear ! help

Hello, I am new and I write from the far Italy.
I have a 1986 LJ70 (Bundera somewhere)

I am forced to regear a 4.88 stock rear diff and I found the gears I have bought are "fat" and my old 4.88 (destroyed) ring was thin as you told in this useful thread.

I will probably grind the carrier. I see the difference between the rings is more or less 7 mm (or 0,275 in). should I grind this amount the carrier ? Or is in enough a lower grinding ?
I am afraid the carrier would become weak but as ToyRunner1 and other did it, I think there's a way to survive to this operation.

Unfortunately in Italy there's plenty of 4.88 stock 3rd member and I only found them looking around...

thanks for infos to all

In respnse to the does it fit ???

We just installed a 90 4Runner V6 rear third into a front 85 solid axle. No mods were required at all. Pull axleshafts, remove old diff, put in V-6 diff, install axles and oil (same gear ratio of course)

The only grinding I had to do was to fit the whole 3rd in the housing, and it was very minor. My carrier originally came with 4.10s, so regearing it wasn't a problem. The information I was talking about in regards to regearing a stock 4.88 looks to have been wrong

Old thread I know. I just wanted to know about 4.88 3rds. I just pulled a 3rd out of a 2wd auto v6 4Runner and the sticker on the doorjamb said 225/75 I believe, same as my pickup with the 31" tire package. I tried measuring how many turns of the drive shaft it take to turn the output but can't ascertain what it exactly is. I doubt pics would help but if they would I'll get some.

Quick question

I'm looking at picking up 6cyl 4.88 gears, will they fit in my 4cyl 90 4runner? I know the ring and pinion would be the issue if there is one. Can I use the stock 4.10 r & P with the new 6cyl 4.88s if I need to?

squatch - your post is a bit confusing, because you ask about ring and pinion issues, and then ask if you can use a 4.10 r & p with new 6cyl 4.88s. I have a guess that you are thinking about getting your hands on some factory 4.88 third members (the entire chunk). If that is the case, then yes the factory 8" V6 4.88 third member will fit fine into the rear of your 4Runner, but may require a bit of grinding on the flange to get the ring gear to slide into housing. On the front, you will likely just buy the whole IFS Factory 4.88 differential and drop your current 4.10 differential. When you say "Can I use the stock 4.10 r&p with the new 6cyl 4.88s" I guess you are asking if you can put your 4.10 gears into the factory 4.88 housing...the answer here is no. The factory 4.88 has a thin ring gear and cannot be re-geared with aftermarket gears. Not even sure though why you would go to the trouble of buying a factory 4.88 third member and then putting your 4.10s in it.
