Problems removing shifter
Hello I have a 1982 4x4 SR5 pickup truck that has a very sloppy shifter. I found another to replace it with, but on both trucks when trying to pull out the whole shifter it feels like its loose enough to remove, but there is a rod or something that goes into the tranny that just wont come out.
Does anyone have any pictures or explanations on how to remove this? Hopefully it wont take a special tool.
thanks mucho for any suggestions.

Put the tranny in neutral, take the boot off, undo the 4 bolts on the top of the transmission holding the shifter down, Now...theres a silvery/chrome lock ring at the base of the shifter might be hard to see at first but you will find it, its spring loaded, push down and rotate it until it springs up, should come out after that.

I don't think you need to remove the four bolts from the top of the trans. On my 83' L52 trans I used some pliers to push down on the ring while turning counter clockwise a quarter turn. You can google "toyota shift lever removal" and get plenty of info. You may only need to replace the plastic seat the shifter lever sits in. Marlin Crawler sells a good replacement.
