Power steering for my 83 pickup?

Hi.

Ive just bought an 83 pickup, but the steering box on it is very worn, so needs replacing, so as my girlfriend is really struggly with the weight of the steering on it due to the wide tyres its got, so I thought I would kill two birds with one stone.

The engine has a spare belt for a power steering pump, so I know that side of things will be straightforward (its got a later 2.4D engine fitted)
But what about the steering box, are the PAS ones a direct swap or is it going to be a lot of work to fit one?

Here are a couple of pics of it anyway, as im new here so its a good chance to show the old girl off a bit

I bought all my parts for my power steering swap from a same year pick up.

Pump, res, box, lines, pulleys, etc.

Thanks for the kind comment, we're really pleased with it
It was my girlfriend who wanted it, but its grown on me too now.

Not sure on the lights, maybe its an 82, would that explain it? (here in the uk our reg letters can cover more than 1 year, so until I get the ownership papers through I dont know the year so I took a guess)

Yota Tony, thanks for that, good to know its possible then

Do you know if the later steering box's will fit too?
Or is it specific to vehicles of the same age?

Ive won a cheap later PAS box on ebay, so im going to try and fit that, but I havent received it yet.

You can use a new box from an IFS Toyota if you have high steer. I won't be using the box I have because I'm going to high steer.

You have NO idea from those pictures how much space we actually have in our shed mate, lol
See this video for a bette idea:

Sadly im not allowed to do anything commercial with it, just light mechanical stuff at the most.

Its big enough to park around 2000 cars or so inside!

You are seeing at most 1% of my shed there mate.
Its big enough for around 2000 cars, but sadly im only a guardian of it, I dont own it, not even allowed to put a ramp in, such a waste!

We also use it for this sort of thing sometimes though, lol:

High steer is moving the tie up on top of the springs...well it's a lil more then that but I don't have any links handy to explain it.

Ah right, mine is still standard from a steering point of view I beleive, so that modification wont have been done.

Presumabley that is done to correct steering geometry when you raise the car a lot so that you dont end up with crazy steering arm angles?

Right on.
Not to mention it moves your tie rod out of harms way. It's pretty damn hard to steer when your tires are pointed at each other.

Man, that's in great shape. Could you throw up some more pics of how that spare tire is mounted on the tailgate or bumper ? I can't quite see it in the pics. Since lots of folks swap out the stock power steering over here for the hi steer or sometimes known as cross over, there should be plenty of available steering boxes.

his truck looks like a 79 or 80 since there is no gusset on the front axle. isn't the date code on the drivers door jam? that will tell the year.

oh buy the way thats a real nice truck for the year. both of my 1st gen trucks the frames are to rusted so they are getting parted now if you need some parts i have 10 79-83 trucks for parts. i can ship over seas. i have 80 trucks over all
