Amsoil in old engine...

Saturday I did an oil change with amsoil... I am a fan of synthetic oil, but It seems like a lot of people I know are convinced it is a bad idea to run full sythetic in an old engine, with concerns of high oil consumption...

So if anyone is considering amsoil in their first gen, so far so good! I haven't heard the classic toyota tick that my truck was making with regular oil (it sounds like it is running really good). I will let you know if I burn gallons of oil.

I think the issue is that a lot of the old worn out oil seals are only keeping your engine from leaking oil because they're plugged up with old dirty oil gunk. Synthetics run nice & clean and actually clean up those oil seals, which were only not leaking because of the gunk, so once the gunk is cleaned out by the good oil...leaky. Let us know if you spring any leaks! This is just what I've heard so I can't say from experience.

On a newer engine, the synthetics keep the seals conditioned and keep them from cracking and shouldn't build up gunk, so there's so issue.

never heard too much about synthetics cleaning out the seals but i can see how it would work.

only reason i would not install it in an old engine that previously ran conventional oil is that the cast and metal in your engine is conditioned with conventional oil. when you mix synthetic and conventional they will separate from each other. now it wont happen over night but when you install synthetic into an old engine the synthetic holds the conventional oil in the cast and metal parts of your engine such as crank and rods. the synthetic will not penetrate with the old conventional oil in the metals. it will also keep the old oil in the rods and crank. after time it will become brittle and sooner or latter brake under stress.

i switched on my 3.0 maybe 6 months ago. No problems yet.

Mine has 256,000 miles on it. ran conventional its whole life.

Keep an eye on the oil though, mine got dirty super quick for the first couple changes.

I switched to synth in my I6 ford(220k+) and my rear main seal leak went from a quarter size oil spot overnight to about a 4 inch diameter spot. I've heard the synth molecule size is smaller so it can "slip" by seals easier.

hummm.. I think mudcrasher is right. I just did some google research and I found out I should have done a engine flush. Here is the link: http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/aef.aspx

Bummer, I am glad I made this post. Never would have thought of that.

nope.

Went from castrol conventional oil its whole life, and i switched to mobile 1, got dirty quick.

i think the first change was almost black within 500 miles, the 2nd had similar results and now it is starting to stay cleaner longer.

Btw went to walmart, they have castrol syntech for $20 for a 5-quart jug, mobile one is $28 for 5-quarts.

Is it worth it to drain & do the flush next week or wait 6 mo. or never? Should I be concerned?

You have done 3+ oil changes in 6mo on synthetic? do you drive like 2500 miles a month?
