I'm trying to figure out the caster angle on my 1983 Pickup build (This truck will be a daily driver driven regularly at highway speed). The truck has a 2" Old Man Emu front springs with Trail gear 5.5" shackles (2" longer than stock).

From what I understand per the FSM, I need 3.5* +/- 0.75* (2.75 to 4.25*) of caster with the top of the axle rotated towards the rear (pinion angle rotated downward). First question: am I reading that right?

Second question: where do I take the measurement to determine the caster angle-Can I determine the caster angle from the spring perches or steering knuckle bearing caps? The axle is an unmodified factory axle with all rebuilt factory steering components.

I'm not going to hack up and re-weld the steering balls or spring perches. I'm just looking for the correct way to measure the caster so I can install the appropriate shims. I appreciate any help you guys can provide me.

I figured it out. I confirmed that the caster angle is positive as stated above. The measurement can be taken from the bearing caps; however I used to bottom "ledge" of the caps where it slightly hangs off of the top of the knuckle to take a more accurate measurement. My uncorrected caster angle was about 6* and I actually had 2.5* shims lying around so I was able to use them to get the correct caster. Everything said and done, it measured out to a perfect 3.5* of caster! Woot woot!!
