1980 Sr5 20 R Issues !!!!!????

How do I make this short ?????

Driving the hell out of this thing with all the confidence in the world and BAM !!!!!!

Last night cruising about 60,purring like a kitten just like always.

All of a sudden it felt like someone reached over and turned the ignition off!!!

It would be on,off,on,off,on,off !!!!

It would die down to about 30 mph then all of a sudden come back to life and get me back to around 50 then die out again.

As I went further It got worse. It would get to 30 mph and die down to 10 mph and take off again..

This went on for about 15 miles and she just finally died out and left me on the side of the road.

I tried to start and I could hear the fuel pump running so I do not think its fuel related.

I sat on the side of the road for about 10 min. and it finally started and ran like crap all the way home. I couldn't get past 25 mph.

I am wondering if this could be a coil problem ???????

I know when a coil goes bad it can do some erratic things.

I tried to make it short.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

my guess is that it is in the electronics. they can act fine some times and then act up then go back to normal. your fuel pump should be a mechanical pump on the pass side of the front of the head. check the coil, igniter, vacc advance, dist pickups, ign switch, could be many things. start troubleshooting things.
or even could be the FF or the carb, fuel pressure (not much pressure to start out with), even something in the fuel tank sucking up onto the fuel line pickup? good luck

check your distributor cap a cracked or loose cap can make your truck run like crap. The last time I had one go bad, it made a loud pop and the truck started running rough.

Got in touch with a Toyota Goo Roo.

He said to check all fuel filters.

Did that and all is flowing fine and clean.

Said to check under dist. cap for "residue" on pick ups.

Did that, all looks clean.

One last thing he said to try is to start it (if it will start) and see if there is any arcing going on between all the wires.

It started, and no arcing going on.

It started fine, just like it always does and ran like a top.

I went for a 10 minute drive and the thing runs great, no issues.

The thing has always idled rough, kinda sputters when idleing.

That has changed, now it has a "surge" idle.

This is different.

Told the Toyota dude this and he said to cross my two center plug wires and start and get to backfire through the carb a good 5-6 times (remove air breather cover) and put back and see if that helps.

Also said to try to pull off the fuel inlet and check if screen is plugged, and see what it will do.

We will see what happens.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated !!!
