Toyota Recalls 100K 2024-2025 Tacoma Pickups Over Leaking Brake Hoses
Mud and dirt can build up inside the rear wheels of select Tacoma pickups, which could lead to leaking brake hoses.
The proverbial paint has barely dried on the newest-generation Toyota Tacoma, which just debuted for the 2024 model year bearing a host of changes from the ground up. However, like most all totally new vehicles, that launch hasn’t gone completely hitch-free, with a few issues plaguing specific models – including slipping gears, delayed shifts, and even complete failures of its eight-speed automatic transmission. Now, Toyota is recalling a large number of 2024-2025 Tacoma pickups for a very different reason – leaking brake hoses.
This new recall pertains to 106,061 2024-2025 Toyota Tacoma pickups built between January 2, 2024 and January 17, 2025, all of which are equipped with four-wheel-drive, 17-inch wheels, and 16-inch brakes (including the SR, SR5, TRD PreRunner, and TRD Off-Road) – though Toyota is also investigating two-wheel-drive models and other combinations to see if they’re also impacted. As such, it’s quite possible that the recall could be expanded in the future, but for now at least, it only covers those specific models.
In affected Tacoma pickups, there’s just enough clearance between the rear brake hose (which comes from supplier HC Queretaro, S.A. de C.V) and the brakes/wheels that, during off-road conditions, specifically, mud and dirt can build up inside the rear wheels on the brake hoses. Over time, that buildup could cause brake fluid to leak, leading to a reduction in braking performance, elongated stopping distances, and increase the risk of a crash.
The fix for this problem is at least relatively simple – dealers will replace both rear brake hoses on impacted Tacoma pickups with new ones featuring an improved design, free of charge. Toyota plans to mail out letters informing affected owners of this recall on March 24, 2025, but in the meantime, they can contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331, referencing recall numbers 25TB04 and 25TA04. Alternatively, owners can contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit nhtsa.gov for more information.
