I've considered getting rid of the EGR but the emissions guys around here are pretty tough. If you want I can keep an eye out for another VAFM. I just shipped my spare to a member on here and will be hitting the scrap yard soon looking for other goodies.

Oh and I hear you on finding 4.88's being tough.

Good luck with the gear swap! I know I kick myself about 3 times a month on not doing the deeper gears.

Since you do a lot of over-the-road pulling also look into an upgrade in the VAFM area and exhaust. The best mod I ever did to the 22re was the 1982 Supra VAFM. It breaths a lot better and eliminated my 5th gear hill climb issue. Match that with a nice LC header and that little 4 banger will really run. I'm doing the LC later on this month to assist the Supra VAFM that I did a while back. So far I'm knocking down 27-29mpg on the highway loaded with camping gear and an average of 24mpg in town.

    Hope this helps.

I'd say go with the 4.88's. You'll be a lot happier when towing anything and it gives you the option of going with a 32 or 33 inch tire later on. I run my rig to and from fishing and camping spots every weekend and sometimes want 4.88's when the runner is loaded with camping gear.

Go with 4.88's and be happy.

    Hey Fred,

I would defantly go with 4.88's. With 4.88's and 31's you will only tach 300rpm faster when hwy crusing then stock. So you will still be able to cruise at high speeds but will have the extra grunt that the gearing offers.
