On my friends laptop I believe you hold down the function key and use the up and down arrow keys.

blue "Fn" on the lower left hand side.
then use the cursor keys for contrast and brightness. depending on model, you have various other shortcut key combos too from ejecting the optical drive, turning on and off the wifi radio, video output control, etc... as usual, RTFM... or call 1-800-624-9896, option 3 for tech support... lol...

This was not on my laptop, but anothers. Good tips though, as I want to get a more modern laptop one of these days.
