Avid PC user and builder here to help with your troubles

Hi everyone.

I just thought that I'd tell everyone here that I've had computers for years and have also built several for friends. I've about been through almost anything that can and, eventually will happen to everyone who owns one.
I'm also the biggest game addict there is on the net and have the game selection that 99% of gamers will drool on....lol.

I also have experienced every windows operating system from windows 95 to windows xp pro. I DON'T have any knowledge with the newest 64bit systems though as of yet till they get the bugs a bit more worked out.
I also have no experience with linux, unix, apple or mac.

For the most part, as far as general software goes, for me, I can pretty much say "been there....tried that"

Here's the last one I built myself

If anyone needs any help with anything, leave me a post here....or shoot me a pm and I'll help you out the best I can.

Here's my PC's specs

Thermaltake Xaser III V1000 Tower (Black)
Thermaltake Hardcano 12
Antec True550 (PSU)
P4C800E-Deluxe (MOBO)
Intel P4 3.0E Prescott (CPU)
Zalman CNPS7000A-Cu (CPU Cooler)
Corsair CMX512-3200C2PT (2gigs)
Seagate 160gig IDE (HD)
Seagate 80gig IDE
Seagate External Storage = 720gigs
Plextor 708a (cd/rw)
Plextor 712 DVD
Sony floppy
Audigy2 ZS Platinum (soundcard)
ATI Radeon X800XT Pro (VideoCard)
XP Home

I am in the exact same bucket as you. Know everything described except the new generation. I am gonna wait for it to go a lil more mainstream then build a real good system. The only difference is, I don't have a great game selection .

Just wondering, are you a member at 3gmforums.com? The pic reminds me of someone there

Welcome to the club! This forum could always benefit from another tech savvy enthusiast such as yourself. Do you also work in the computer field?

Nice rig you got there too. I'm more partial to AMD, but I have nothing against Pentiums. When did you put that sucker together? I remember specing a machine out about 2 years ago that was almost the exact same configuration.

Hey thanks Churnd

No....pc's are just a hobby to me. Self taught the hard way back in 95. No schoolin at all. I just figured it was a neat thing to get into was all. MAN....WHAT A RIDE TO GET WHERE I'M AT!!!

I work in the marine industry as a finish carpenter....building yachts.

I never got the want bad enough to get into the AMD scene. Tempted=yes. I have anough pc's and parts to trip over as it is now. AMD's another ball game all together. But I have a lot of friends that have them and they are just as good...some better.

It's a matter of taste I guess

Like Snap-on said - a virus will do that.

Leave it off and buy a hardware router/firewall. ...well, clean the system up first.

I need to upgrade eventually. I built my current computer at least 3 years ago. It has an Athlon XP 1800+ with a GEforce 3 Ti200 video card. Its been a good one but getting old. I would like to get something close to what you have. Let us know how it runs.

Also, I am so out of touch with what is new. I just read about the SLI motherboards the other day. Basically one motherboard capable of having 2 video cards. I didn't even know of such a thing.

SLI is cool, but spendy.
My friend Andy just got the Asus A8N SLI mobo, the new AMD FX60 CPU ($1,100 just for the CPU), two GB of RAM, and two XFX NVIDIA 7800 GS 256 MB vid cards.

Each vid card was about $500 each.
It is a killer system, and he had to water cool it to bring the temps down.

I recommend you update your antivirus, then reboot into safe mode. Then do a virus scan. Hopefully it'll do the trick. If not, there's other measures that can be done.

Well....lets start with the common reasons.

When was the last time you opened the case and gave it a good blowing out with an air compressor ?? Not too closely...but enought to get out the cobwebs

maybe while you got the case open...make sure all the screws are snug.

Note: Shut down the pc, disconnect the power, then push the power button to discharge the excess power in the power supply. There *should be a on/off button on the back of the pc also. Make sure that is in the off position too. Then push the power button on the front of the pc again to make sure.

I don't mean to circumvent your Q&A, but the HP XW4100 has a variable speed fan - he could be hearing it wind up as the machine gets hotter.

very true. but that can also be from never keeping the cobwebs out and it is forced to speed up

How would I swap HDs out? I really need to keep all the programs I have on my old HD and I need to transfer them to my new HD. I've got Norton Ghost already, is that sufficient enough?
