I have a working image, but my site is not ready. I'll try to have it up and running today. It might take time with work and all. I'm also not sure how they're dealing with the CD-Keys. I got a different one each time I downloaded.

i would assume if you dont get the installation/boot up to go through then the key is never registered with MS and therefore still valid.
as it is a software download i suppose you could match the key to THAT specific download but that seems like a lot of trouble to go through for a beta...

Well, I'm typing this from Vista, and I like it. My GPU can't do AERO, but everything else works well. I had to get the XP driver for my NIC from Dell's website to install, then got the rest from Windows Update.
Now to work on my server. As my luck would have it, one of my co-workers "borrowed" my only good image. I'm going to get my server running properly, and when he brings it back, I'll have it loaded.
In all reality, you guys could probably have it downloaded by the time I get my server ready. Just a thought.
I'm also running Office 2007 Beta, and it works nicely. Apparently there's only one antivirus program that works with Vista... CA's eTrust. They have a beta available for free download once you register, and a years worth of updates.

i agree but the way MS has been getting pissy about pirated versions lately i would expect that to change with Vista

I think the only way to prevent piracy would be to have it "check" online. It would be waaay too time consuming to make each key disc specific, since all the discs are pressed. All the discs are exactly the same, what changes is when you install the OS. Windows then creates a specific key that matches your machine. It sends that specific key, along with your product key, to microsoft's servers. If Microsoft sees a product key with 2 or 3 different "machine" keys, it blocks that product key from working. If you found another product key, and used that (with the same CD), installation would work.
I hope all of that made sense, lol

Ok, perhaps someone could explain to me why Apache on Debian won't serve a ~4GB file on an ext3 filesystem (if that matters). I can serve a ~450MB file just fine, but the vista .iso downloads in like a second, and is 0kb. I've cleared my cache on the machine I'm trying to download to, so I'm confused.

Apparently, Apache2 doesn't like files over 2GB. I'm looking for a workaround.
Found it. Apache 2.2.2 will work. Getting it installed.

Ok, Apache 2.2 was supposed to work. Now I'm getting a 720 byte .iso file, and that's it. I can still serve files under a gig just fine. I don't get it. According to Apache's site:
I am running 2.2, so it should work out of the box. Why it doesn't, I don't know. Leo, any help here?
Large File Support
httpd is now built with support for files larger than 2GB on modern 32-bit Unix systems. Support for handling >2GB request bodies has also been added.

zip up the file, but break up it into 500 mb chunks.
i use 7-zip (from 7-zip.org) as my freebie ZIP program. the interface has options to break up into CD, DVD, floppy, etc...
then just post all of the segments.
when the user tries to zip on their end, it will look for all the segments...

no...
7-zip is just another open source WINZIP type program. it will read and write standard .ZIP files.
once you zip the ISO into multiple chunks, the first chunk will know how many segments are there.
back we i used to split for floppies (:eek, the first disk is always inserted at the end of the operation. that's why when you then try to reconstitute the main ZIP file, it knows how many segments to work with...
so you should have like
vista1.zip
vista2.zip
.
.
.
vistaN.zip
make links for each one so people can download them. then the person will double click on VISTA1.ZIP and it should then recreate a single ISO...
then burn, baby burn...
i hate seeing people use winzip as shareware forever... lol...

oh BTW, 7-zip has it's own format, 7ZIP... duh... which is more efficient than ZIP.
so if you do use 7-zip, make sure you select ZIP as the output format or else people will then have to d/l and install 7-zip...
small tangent trivia... did you know the first 2 bytes of any valid ZIP file is the initials of the ZIP file format creator... phil katz... RIP phil...
he died of a sad and tragic way...

just another speed bump in the information superhighway... sigh...

I got a copy about a month ago. That is my work got a copy and it ended up at my house... i wonder how that happened. I have had no problems with hardware requirements for it... although it wasn't really fast. And vista rated my hardware a 4 i don't know if that is out of 10, but it is sad. . Vista is OK, it sure is flashy, and i like the new search feature. I was more interested in new admin type stuff which there seems to be very little of. Careful what you install, vista does not play nice. I made that mistake and now I can't keep it running long enough for it to be useful. I guess it’s nice for end users who like shiny things; I would rather have win98 GUI and have everything be instant and stable… unlike win98 actually was. Also still many many bugs to work out.
