Question Stereo Help in a 97 4 Runner Limited

I have a 97' 4-runner Limited and I was wanting to put in an aftermarket stereo. The only problem I'm having is that the aftermarket wiring harness doesn't match up to the one that comes out of the back of the factory stereo. I know that the factory stereo won't work outside of my 4 Runner, but I'm wondering if the box that the wire that plugs into the back of the factory stereo needs to come out in order for me to get the aftermarket harnesses to match up. If anybody can shine some light on the situation, I would greatly appreciate it.

Yes it is silver, but the thing that puzzled me about it is that it's pluged into a smaller black box off to the side. I just want to make sure I'm not gonna screw anything up.

You need an adapter that more or less allows you to plug your aftermarket deck into your factory wiring. Any stereo shop will carry these adapters. Once you have the adapter, it must be connected (soldered or crimped) to the wiring harness that came with your aftermarket player. If you're still not sure, have a shop do it for you, it won't cost over $40.

I already know that much, it's that smaller interior box that localmotion was talking bout. He hit it right on the head, just not sure bout the smaller black box. I guess if all else fails, I can just try it and see what happens.

Bob. That was extremely helpful, especially since I bought a Clarion also. Thank you for clearing up what the smaller box is, but just to make sure, will I leave the silver box hooked up to the amp after I unhook the 2 for the harnesses?
