I'm toying with the idea of on ontop of an exo over a single cab with a flat bed

I currently have a Yakima basket over a single cab....not sure how well it would look if I didn't have a cap on as well. I already had the bars and towers...just needed new clips and the basket (rack attack has good deals on all Yakima and Thule stuff). I would like to see what you come up with.

Looks good from the sketches. I might add another structural piece by the A-Pillar and across the wiper area. If your going that far you might as well exo that bad boy.

since i got your guy's attention I did up a another one tonight.

See I spend my time at work when the boss isnt watching sketching exos for the yota! =) Then compile them at home in 'real' sketches.

My original career path was engineering and/or architecture before persueing helicopter piloting.

back ontopic heres tonights concept:



This one is a mix of about a years worth of thinking, drawing and planning. It utilizes my existing low profile toolbox (save $ = reality) and makes the most use of square tubing (another save in $ since i can fab square stuff). And utilizes the simplest tubing which I cannot fab myself I'd have to pay someone to bend the tube.

Im using a WOOD bed and sides. The sides would be removeable past the toolbox and the tailgate as well (not sure how yet).

The tailgate is my own personal endeavour. Expanded medal with a 3/16" peice in the middle with Vinyl decal TOYOTA in red, or white. If only i had metal connections instead of custom car stickers =P

This is where I want to put the spare tire.

I don't leave home without tools and a spare tire anymore. I had to learn the hard way. NEVER AGAIN!



*mounting a spare on a swing out rear gate would cause more fab work, more highway drag. Loss of visibility overall.

Mounting it inside the bed on the driver side is the best spot IMO because this from what I've experienced is the one place it wont interfere with my visibility from the drivers seat. It wont interefere with blind spots or cause a blind spot and being mounted parallel to the line of travel it causes less highway wind drag.

Right now my spare is sitting flat in my bed as theres no way to really mount it vertical like this with a stock bed. Which takes up bed space. A LOT OF bed space =).. I'm surprised mroe people dont mount their spares in their flat beds vertical like this.

And yet another post.

I want to do an exo eventually but you must understand tube work is expensive if you dont own a bender. So I'm trying to design in something I can REALISTCALLY do this summer then eventually add on the exo. I want to run tube work over the cab and down the A-pillars. However I'm not to fond of the tube work over the fenders (whats the point of having fenders if its covered in tubing???) ... So i think just down the fenders then maybe a brace over the cowl and a nice bumper upfront with a winch will suffice.

afterall this isnt any rubicon rockcrawler. Instead im designing it as a weekend excursion moreso expedition overall utility truck. A get you A-B all-around workhorse. ..

I dig the sketches. I think they are great. What about keeping your spare in the stock location? If you haven't check out Quasimodo's (sp?) over on pirate. He built a sweet, functional flatbed (although no roof rack) and was able to squeeze a full-size (I think he runs 36" tires) there.

Got links to that flatbed? I just finished mine up with the expanded steel base and while its very functional for tying things down I dont find it to look very good. I'm considering buying allpros flatbed kit and making the center tub wider and a few other little modifications.

There is A LOT of information in here (70 pgs long) but on the first page he gives an index of where to find stuff. If I had a photobucket accnt I would post pics of his rig. That being said, I have about 50 photos of flatbed designs on my computer. Happy reading!

I'd vote for the first idea if it was a poll. I really like the looks of that and could really see that put on an extended cab. Nice artwork and imagination.

most of what u go there can be done without a tubing bender. If u use square tube it'll be even easier..just an idea.

Yea im trying to design ideas around square tube and incorporate as little round as i can.

The last drawing there has round only on the extra supports behind the cab. Everything else is square. Figure that's only two bends and a notched cross at the top .. be inexpensive to have someone fab that. The rest I could fab at home.

I like the sketch with the roof rack built in better than the one without, although it would cause more drag.

I really like your first one. I may have to "borrow" it. Here is my flatbed design i kinda stole it off of a pirate design, but no one used it. I know its paint but i think it looks good, of course it will be even. The cage will be round tube, but the first stage will be all square tubing. And my tool box will be kinda like a ridgeline, trunk style...
